Feeling dumb

On Reddit, there's always these people posting pictures of monotubs in full bloom saying FIRST GROW EVER! and it makes me feel like such an idiot. My first attempt at PF Tek gave me barely any yield at all. I switched to monotubs for my first try and fucked that up by sticking my spawn bags into a sleeping bag to keep warm, not realizing the importance of the filter patch and FAE. I realized in time to save two bags but only ended up getting about an oz of mushrooms from each over 3 sparse flushes. I ended up with a ton of aborts, I'm guessing from using coir as my casing material but who knows.
This new batch, I couldn't find any rye berries so I decided to do WBS. But I think this one tek that had no soaking led to not enough moisture so it stalled after half colonizing the jar. I decided to put the grain to bulk yesterday with some horse manure compost I shoveled up at a local equestrian center. Only too late did I realize I probably didn't prepare it correctly and it probably has too much ammonia content and I have likely wasted by grain spawn. Well that won't happen again. I've got the rest in a dehydrator at 145 to leech out all the ammonia before I try to make another batch of substrate.
I just don't understand how a smart person like me manages to make mistake after mistake and these other fuckers on reddit have beautiful results on their very first time. It is so frustrating.

The world is a humbling place Recognize that these issues can happen to anyone and none of us are above it, these are all learning experiences that you're taking with you to become even better the next time. It took me 3~4 first attempts to get a successful first one, and I'm sure many others can relate. You know what you know now and just work on tightening your technique and whats due to come to you will.

Yeah trust me, for every seemingly perfect flush you see posted, there are probably 10+ others that have experienced the same troubles as you. Ofc you won't be seeing to much of their failed attempts posted on reddit. Don't be discouraged mate

Learn to grow here, then post your results on Reddit. The other way around is going to be pure fail. Reading what you describe is your process sounds like you are taking tips from a mushroom sub on Reddit, then coming here for clarification.

I have never failed!!! I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work!!!....Albert Einstein As a newbie to bulk myself I will tell you not to give up.... refine your technique.. study... and you will prevail!! Just had my first success in bulk after a few failures and the time spent making mistakes was worth it. Slow down and breathe brother

Hpoo must be weathered and dried out .. you can’t use fresh Hpoo. Plus even when using weathered dried Hpoo it has to be sterilized.. at least I did ages ago .

And by weathered I mean rained on water leaches the bad stuff out of it ... so likely at least 6 months old. Better yet 1 year out in the elements

Trick is to land on a trusted tek and follow it to a T. PF tek is very useful to learn how to do things with discipline. Do things clean within proper temp, humidity and light ranges. Little cakes never produce much weight.
Hpoo wants to be pasturized, not steralized. It should be aged, pulverized and hydrated to field capacity first.
Cannot stress enough to follow a trusted tek. Read read read.

Man if you just pick a solid method and follow directions without cutting corners it’s very hard to mess up.
Stick to coir!

I'm gonna be honest... I'm a little bit retarded myself. So here's a confession that is hard to make but nevertheless you should hear it. I went for atleast like two years not using the jiggler on my pressure cooker and I wondered why I always got contams...
The only reason I didn't give up is because I'm persistent be it fucking up over and over I'm still gonna try again. That's what it takes to be successful in not just this hobby but life in general.
Try, try, try, and try again.
Oh an I finally got the jiggler for my PC... Lol

Yeah, lol. My thinking was that it didn't matter I guess I thought just cooking it was killing the contams... Since letting it get up to psi and stuff I get way less contams. I would just cook the hell out it tho. Worked sometimes.

What teks you using bro?
Try coco coir as a sub. Its super easy to work with.
I would suggest starting with shoeboxes.
How are you inoculating your jars?
I use wbs too
I dont soak it, i use foomans tek. Usually let it dry longer than what he recommends, sometimes even overnight with good results
Youre already learning man.

I failed, failed, and continued to fail through contamination, sparce harvests, and overall had a bad time till I copped on to some good practices.
Research, then implement.

Thanks. I do feel like I'm learning. I may not be coming out of each attempt with a grand flush of mushrooms, but I am coming out of it with knowledge. It's one thing to blindly follow instructions, but another thing to understand why each step is important. I wish I knew someone locally who I could learn from but the legal status makes it kinda difficult.

I think I managed to age it pretty well using my dehydrator at 145. According to the internet, that is a good temperature for activating the microorganisms that process the ammonia. We will see. I have re hydrated it and am pasteurizing it now.

I thought coir wasn't all that high in nutrients? I'm using some horse manure compost from an equestrian center.

Coir, vermiculite, and gypsum plus the nutrients from the spawn grain you're using provide everything the mushroom needs to fruit. Many people choose to use pasteurized manure in the mix which is just fine, but is with most cubes unneeded.

Coir is just easy to use
Provides water and surface area
Easy to prep and resistant to contam
The jar of grain is the nutrients
Ive never grown with manure, maybe its better, some claim the mush is stronger, idk
But coir and a jar can push an oz of mush first flush
Thats good enough for me

This was me, but the powers of gypsum, with the coir/vermiculite giving an easier grow medium makes for a powerful combo, you should try it.

Pretty dope that you still pulled out an Oz from your tubs! Like Enkidu said, shoeboxes filled with hydrated coir and clean nutritious spawn are a great way to learn a ton. The conditions are simple to maintain, the materials are easy to find, and the harvests are usually juicy. Check these out: Frank's WBS I use Frank's, but Foo Man's is tried and true. Bod's Easy AF Shoeboxes Mushboy's Shoeboxes Damion5050 Coir Tek Self Healing Lid Tek Really helpful lid tek in keeping sterile conditions until inoculation.

Yeah ive tried gypsum
Cant say i noticed a difference, felt like it sludged up a bit and didnt like the way it mixed in my sub
I have some so soon as i get going like i use to ill try some again
Yeah those are some good links.
I like shoeboxes and foomans wbs prep. I let the wbs dry longer but its a super easy and fast tek that worked well for me
