Much less mess than the WBS I used to use. 65 bucks CAD for 50 pounds which is a bit expensive IMO. Agar colonises a mother jar in 3 weeks, 2-3 more after a G2G at 10:1. Getting faster after every transfer!
I get 50# of wheat or barley for about 10 bucks from the feed store and the prep is ridiculously easy especially once you know what you're going for.
I've been thinking of trying the no prep with millet since the source I get it from is very clean.
I'm hoping I can just fill bags with dry grain, add water, seal, and sterilize... but the prep is so easy with barley or millet already I don't see much gain but a little time.
But back to the op topic: I think barley has won me over. getting super fast colonization and was the easiest and fastest prep I've ever done. Lefty' EASIER Than Fuck Barley Prep
Millet is great, seems these no prep teks for it will do the culture a favor, rinse, soak, and boil is too much especially for newcomers if you can reduce the leg work f on the beginning helps focus on more important technique of keeping things clean. I mean I feel I can throw a 50# bag into a kettle not worry about it. I was all about cleaning grains before these no prep techniques came up, millet a clean grain does great with agar IME. But one down size is it’s smaller and therefore takes much more to complete spawn bag or jar. Just got done prepping 50 bags did 4qts a bag they came out to 5# not sure why I know with rye their like 4 the bags are bigger but more inoculation points with millet.

you ever try barley?
prep is way faster and they seem to be less sensitive to needing just the right amount of hydration. I've had problems with wheat drying out on the top of the bags and not colonizing properly. but not barley with even 30-40 min less boiling/hydrating.
Just thought you might like them as I really do like wheat and barley for me was just the next step up.

What do you guys think the best grain would be for keeping things low key? Don't want to look like I'm making moonshine or something...would rather look like I'm doing something non-suspicious. I use popcorn, I get it in 50 pound bags and it's quite expensive. If they ask what I'm doing with it I tell them I watch too many movies and smile.

WBS is the best for low key. Your just filling up your bird feeder. It's probably my favorite grain because you can buy it anywhere, works great and prep is easy.
Also who cares if you buy bird seed?
That being said I personally love oats, but that's a whole different animal.

Yeah good point. WBS would be the best for low-key. Didn't even cross my mind since I had such negative experiences with it. It was probably my tek, or I was using the wrong type of seed but the first year I spent dumping green jars left a bad taste in my mouth.

Nah I’ve never tried barley. Wheat works good so I’ve never tried anything els.
What’s the price like compared to wheat? How’s the prep?

I use rye berries mainly, but have been wanting to use other grains. I'd love your suggestions and possibly documentation in prep for different kinds of grain?
I like rye water agar.

My barley was cheaper but by only $3 per 50# bag. But the prep is much faster and less work.
just boil for 15-20 min, strain and load up into jars/bags. Also I had consistently faster colonization by a day or two compared to wheat.

Not to mention 99.999% of mushrooms you CAN be growing on grain are legal anyways. Just tell the truth if you feel you need to say anything at all. "Oh they are for mushroom growing"

Barley is primarily what I'm using now. Prefer wheat though. Do you have any problems with barley clumping after PC cycle? Mine has been lately and it's not sticky or wet at all, just likes to clump. It still breaks up perfect and it doesn't cause any problems just wondering if anyone else has this happen it didn't seem to happen with the first 50lbs or the top half of the 2nd and hasn't happened much of at all with any other grains unless I did something personally to mess up prep.

no its been pretty similar to wheat in terms of clumping. I have a clump here and there(with wheat and barley) that breaks up easily when time for kneading. The faster colonization aspect and the easier prep is key for me.
Also I often have burst grains where the bags are touching the sterilizer I think caused by leaving the bags to cool in the sterilizer rather than unloading hot. Less so with barley. But this small amount of burst grain mix in with no effort and cause no problems
So far spawn run is identical to wheat. and fruiting is all over the map for me so I can't attribute anything to the type of grain at the moment but seems to be about the same for wheat barley and wbs.
