YouTube monetization * 2
    #26605989 - 04/16/20 02:31 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

How much do you guys know about YouTube monetization?  I've been seeing videos recently where YouTubers show you how much they make from their channels.  It's way, way, way more than I thought.  Now my channel has only a small fraction of the subscribers and views that they do, but still.  I'm starting to think I should consider signing up for it.  Free money, right?

They offered it to me before, but I turned it down.  The reason is that literally NOTHING on my channel was made by me.  It's all clips or documentaries of psychedelic or counterculture icons that I got somewhere and then just uploaded.  So the reason that I turned down YouTube channel monetization was because I was afraid that someday the owner of that content would come after me for money.  Is that a thing?

For example, I have the Jimi Hendrix Rainbow Bridge movie uploaded in 6 or 7 parts.  Most, if not all parts, have been muted because of the Hendrix family.  So if they're so hardcore that they'd get my videos of a fairly obscure Hendrix documentary, which doesn't really have any studio music, muted, then I could see them coming after me for reimbursement of compensation.  But not just the Hendrix family.  Anyone who owns anything that I have on my channel.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks.

Content owners will ding your video and take the revenue basically if they actively look for it. Some more obscure stuff might be easier to get a pass on, but it could likewise be owned by a content farm that just buys up rights to old content for the sole purpose of claiming it when someone uploads it. If it's obscure psychedelia stuff that's older, it might be outside of copyright in general.

I don't think you have to be worried about getting sued or anything though. Usually it's just a claim on your account and someone else tries to claim it. Then you go counter claim it if you think the claim is unjustified if the people dinging it are not the true owners of the material, which I guess happens quite a bit.

Monetize - start an llc- pay yourself from the llc- if they come after the business you should be protected.

I’m not a lawyer.

My advice means nothing in the real world.

Also, if you start making money, YouTube will self police your content. They will pull videos or shit down your channel.

So, my advice is take the money and run.

Thank you both for your answers.  The thing I'm most afraid of though, is a content owner discovering my video and going "Wait, he's been getting paid off my content for years?  I want whatever money he made all this time."

Is that something that has happened or can happen?  I only have 2,300 subscribers and my top 5 videos have 1.5 million views.  Not huge, but some people want every penny.

I doubt it would happen like that, mostly they just wrangle the video into their monetization fold. Jimmy Hendrix video you got there for example would probably be claimed relatively soon as there are AI bots out there watching videos just waiting for a Hendrix riff to pop off.

The user MusicLover420 has a youtube channel with a lot of music on it. He may know more about the in's and outs. Not sure if he monetizes his channel though.

If you have a channel with 2300 subs and over a million views, you have something to build on. If you attend your channel because it’s something you enjoy doing for free, why not work at it and try and make a little $$. Go for it.

I've done a solid amount of research on the subject, having had a channel for years but never monetized it directly.

Anyways some people do make good money on youtube, but it has gotten a lot harder. Just straight ad revenue won't be much unless you are getting lots of consistent views and own the rights to your content so it isn't monetized by someone else.

My channel focuses on old/obscure music, and as it's mainly albums owned by various record labels I don't monetize my channel directly. Most is already monetized by said labels, though I could make money off the non copyrighted albums but it seems morally questionable. This year I started a patreon as well as linking my paypal on youtube when uploading original music I've recorded, haven't worked on it too much but have managed to make 100-200$ mainly from direct paypal donations.

Where the real money is aside from patreon is in merch and affiliates. Most of the channels making real money are advertising products to varying degrees, making "sponsored content". But to do that effectively you want to sponsor products related to your channels, like gaming channels sponsoring computer or game companies. Ads and sponsored content earn more money the more people actually click the links and buy stuff.

Currently there is an epidemic of copyright abuse on youtube. People can sample a song from a 70's non copyrighted album and put out a hip hop track, then end up copyrighting the original 70's album for the sample used and monetizing it. So it has become harder and harder to really make consistent money on youtube directly, hence most channels relying more and patreon and paypal. But the channels doing the best on patreon are blogs and streamers that interact with their fan community pretty directly.

Yeah my channel is non monetized on youtube, that way albums that are not copyrighted will be ad free. But I did start a patreon earlier this year and have been trying to work on monetizing off youtube a bit.

Just hit 100k subs actually and have been considering starting to do occasional vinyl giveaways. My hope is as my channel starts making more consistent money I can spend some of it to buy vinyls from great obscure new bands and do giveaways.

One last note, with all the copyright abuse going on I've had to do a lot of copyright research and learned some interesting things. Have considered making a channel specifically to abuse the copyright law myself but at the expense of evil/massive record labels like UMG/WMG. When something is copyrighted the owners get control of monetization, but when there are 2 owners claiming content the monetization is split 50/50 even if 99% of the content is from the first owner.

So basically you can record a short original audio clip, and file to have it copyrighted. Then upload copyrighted content, like albums/movies but with your copyrighted clip at the start or end. That way when the content is claimed by the owners, you can also claim it for the short bit of audio you recorded and copyrighted. Then you get 50% of the ad revenue. Haven't tested it myself but have watched some videos about it and it seems like it works.

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Yeah I would be worried too about rights

People buy rights to things for the sole purpose of wringing evry penny from it. You do not want to get hit with a claim and then also paying for all their legal expenses if you lose

Maybe you could create original content on similar subject matter and monetize that.
