Using 2 syringes/prints is the same as 1?
    #26604971 - 04/16/20 06:34 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

What I mean is this:

I've read a lot of times here and elsewhere the following statements:

Quote:

"A cube is a cube, variety does not matter"

also:

Quote:

"Using MS anything can happen because it's random genetics"

So I assumed that using a spore print from a particular variety would result in the same results/consistency as using a spore print of another variety.

For my first grow I inoculated 12 jars with 3 different spore prints:
- 4 jars inoculated with Transkei spores
- 4 jars with Thai Pink Buffalo
- 4 jars with Mazatapec

What happened was this:
- all 4 Transkei jars were colonized fast, and the cakes weiled fruits.
- all 4 Mazatapec jars were colonized slow, and cakes produced mutant pins which would always abort
- all 4 Thai Pink Buffalo jars were colonized slow, and the cakes did not produce any pins at all.

If a cube is a cube, and if using MS is that much random genetics, then why the results I had were consistent within each variety? I thought I was not going to be able to tell the difference between each variety.

Is it because using a spore print is not as random as I thought it would be?
And maybe a Cube is not a Cube?

Spores capture some genetics. It is not a hard reset back to hundreds/thousands of years ago each time one takes a print. The genetics are limited but slightly.

For instance, when printing I will take prints from the most prolific heavy fruiter to further that trait, I would not choose to print a mutated abort (for a hypothetical example), each will give something resembling a less randomized genetic than the previous generations spores, and in the direction of the donor printed cap.

So anything inbetween is possible. It may be that someone had a very weak flush of one strain but still put out spore prints, consider the whole spectrum of possibilities, maybe those transkis had a huge flush.

Consider how strains are stabilized, they're grown and printed selectively for generation after generation after generation. Make sense?

So each print taken and then used is another generation? So that would mean that the more you do that the more likely it is that when you use a print it will produce the desired results consistently. That is probably how people can come up with new varieties that we see being sold on some vendors sites.

So when taking prints it is more professional to take one from a good flush with nice looking mushrooms.

That makes sense thank you.

Yes, multispore does not mean multi variety. The spores still keep the variety. But size & potency of each single fruit can vary.
That's what's meant with multispore.

Cube is a cube is a cube doesn't mean they're all exactly the same. But you can't say that variety X is always colonizing fast or is always more potent (except for mutant varieties) or always produces bigger fruits.

The thing about cubes is that you can't really tell the variety if you look at the fruits. At least not for "standard" cubes.

It gets more tricky with mutants.
