Colored cardboard
    #26600418 - 04/14/20 12:48 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey y’all! I’ve been doing a lot more edible growing during this whole quarantine and had a question regarding growing on cardboard. I would love to grow oysters on recycled waste and it seems cardboard would be the best bet. But how about cardboard with ink? Is there anything I should be worried about or am I just being paranoid?

I’m also planning on seeing how well they grow in the invasive beach grass that covers the dunes over here, but that’s a whole other project

Thanks!

Old ink contained lead, new ink is base on soybeans.
Some percentage of raw materials is recycled non-deinked paper, thus its darker color.
This means you can never know what is inside.

The other question is whether mushroom fruits absorb lead or not. I have already ordered analysis on my mushrooms grown on eggboxes just to see what exact level of lead is there (EU action level is 0.3 mg/kg).
I wanted to send shop-bought mushrooms along with my mushrooms to see their lead level too, but because of current shitshow I cannot visit that shop in nearby city.

For the whole one-time you're gonna do it, I wouldn't worry about it.  Growing on cardboard sucks so you're probably gonna wanna switch to something better like fuel pellets soon anyway.

Thanks for the info! You should totally update us on what the analysis reveals!

I had a few big cardboard boxes that I was about to throw away but then thought hey might as well make food from them if I can, but I'm actually using the cardboard to sandwich straw and spawn together in a bucket. I also have an oyster woodchip bed that I'm hoping for good things from.

Forrester, would you consider using cardboard as long as its supplemented with something else, such as woodchips or straw? Like in a bucket? Or would you just say no to cardboard all together?

I love using cardboard.

I have had great success using pure cardboard substrate with cold water past. Granted I used a high spawn rate but I do that regardless.

I have grown Kings on cold past. Cardboard and steamed wood chips, it is great.

I use a box cutter to strip boxes into 2-3" wide and however long strips. Cut 10-15lbs of cardboard and stuff it into a big tote. Add 60% water (with sodium percarbonate as the pasteurizing agent) and let it absorb. Might have to mix it once or twice in twelve hours. Then it's ready to use.

Eh, I just personally find it too much of a pita to use cardboard, but I'd go with dave's method if you like the idea!
For me it's not whether or not it needs to be supplemented I just find the prep too much work.  Fuel pellets I just pour boiling water on, in a bucket.  That's it.  I'm lazy

Nice grows deadmandave! I might have to go get some fuel pellets and do some side by side haha

For cold past of cardboard, is the sodium percarbonate absolutely necessary? Is it necessary for cold past of anything? I’m soaking straw right now but I’ve been under the influence that you just need to soak it for a few days and that will be good enough to pasteurize it

soaking in cold water is not pasteurization. we soak straw for 12 hours or so to hydrate it. cold pasteurization utilizes a chemical like sodium percarbonate or calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) to set back contaminants and give the mushroom mycelium a chance to take over the substrate.

to answer your question, YES sodium percarbonate or hydrated lime or others are necessary when doing a cold pasteurization. Heat treatment is the other option.

There is another method of fermenting the substrate by soaking it until anaerobic bacteria can take over and then draining and inoculating. seems enticing but i havent had a chance to play around with it.

sodium percarbonate is the common ingredient in oxy-clean. I use all free and clear with oxy at a rate of about 2 cups per 50 gallons of water.

cold pasteurization works best with fresh starting materials such as straw that is clean and dry; which doesnt have a visible amount of mold or spores in it or cardboard that has been stored dry. I have not had much success doing cold pasteurization with sawdust.

Yeah I'm trying to do an anaerobic pasteurization style right now cause its so low tech and seems way easy but adding sodium bicarbonate and getting it done in 12 hours sounds pretty nice and easy too.

I've had the straw soaking for a couple days so will probably give it more time but hopefully that will work.

I usually do heat past when using manure based substrates but I figured I would go the easier route with straw. Do you know if using the same method, soaking with sodium bicarbonate, would work with anything other than straw?

straw and cardboard are what i've had success with. sawdust always contaminates before full colonization.

i think you'll know when they straw is fermented because it will give a strong smell. please do keep us updated on how that works.

Going to keep an eye on this as I want to see how it does if you decide to do it.

I'll make sure to update y'all on what happens! I'll also be trying it with the highly invasive beach grass around here and would love to know if anybody has any thoughts on that

Results came:

So the lead content of my mushrooms grown on eggbox paper is less than 0.052 mg/kg. EU limit is 0.3 mg/kg.
I will eat them now.

ZAR248 which is at current exchange rate is about 13.5USD per a heavy metal. Initially I wanted to do arsenic too, but I think it is overkill.

Also ZAR110 for sending a sample (about 6USD) via courier (they require minimum of 100g).

Awesome, I thought it would be way more expensive than that.
