What’s up with these giant clumps? * 1
    #26603383 - 04/15/20 04:17 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone know what’s gone wrong with these two tubs?  They’ve developed really large lumps that don’t seem to resemble pins in any way. The only pins are happening around the edges and literately from off the walls. I’d appreciate any suggestions, I’m fairly new. Thanks!

You've got myc climbing the walls of your liner and what appear to knots on the walls too. My money is on a mix of needing more FAE and possibly some bacterial activity lurking about. The good news is you have pins and knots, so you're in decent shape.

What kind of tub is this?

Yeah man, I've never seen pics with rhizomorphs reaching up like that along with knots on them. I'd honestly like to see if they could be encouraged to grow sideways and form a kind of gridwork over the sub, but I have lots of bad ideas.

Oh damn, you're right! I wonder if some lighting fuckery could be done on these tubs for amusement. I remember RR saying you can basically grow corkscrew fruits if you rotate your tub once per day.

OP, you might have a recipe for a wacky grow tek depending on how this plays out!

Thanks for your input, I’ll work on addressing the FAE. I suspected bacteria considering there are some brownish/yellowish areas as well. I’m not complaining too much; I’m happy just to have some pins, but I am bummed they aren’t utilizing more surface area. Like, I gave you all this lovely substrate to grow on and what do you do? Grow on the freaking garbage bag. Haha.

This is a tub I like to call “I’m new and have no idea what the hell Im’ doing”.  It’s the same kind of terrarium I used for PF cakes, with perilite on the bottom and a fish-tank air pump. Sub is colonized in a show box and then I just set it in there for fruiting. Is this a bad strategy?

Looks super bacterial. Pick out all the fruits you can and set outside/ in another room when it begins to turn green

They look pretty healthy from what I can see in the pictures. But I would agree with the others who said FAE. The little buggers still think they’re under ground with all that c02.  Also just imo I wouldn’t make toooo many changes while it’s pinning. Wouldn’t want them to abort on yea. Also before your next fruiting run you could Scrape the top with a fork. I know it goes without saying but make sure the fork is clean... alcohol lamp, h2o2, etc. You could toss some of the bigger chunks and just try to get it nice and even. I’ve had luck with that in the past. However I have also spread contam from being lazy with the fork lol. So you could totally just let it do it’s thing with more fresh air and probably be fine.

Last note... keep an eye out for fungus gnats... I’ve had similar growth from the larva munchin away under the surface. I didn’t realize until they matured and my entire tub was full of moths lol.

So back to basics for a moment here cuz I'm a little confused. Are you using pearlite for your sub or are you just using it with the pump to maintain conditions? What kind of spawn did you use?

In my book, any strat that gives you results isn't bad, but some give much better results than others. I like simple things because the rest of life outside of this hobby revolves around complicated stuff. The teks and methods I subscribe to are unmodded shoeboxes and tubs, straight coir for cubes, and cheap whole oats. I also consider agar work 100% mandatory and preach the Josex Poke Tek for more consistency and the flexibility of having LC at the cost of a time penalty.

Everyone works a little different and we all play around with how we do stuff, but that's my basic formula right now.

@Dewyuck: That's gnarly. At first glance on the phone if I didn't know better I'd think that first pic was some kind of a coral setup for a reef aquarium. Pretty neat.

Edit: Sphelling airorz

Yeah your myc is super bacterial.

Idk enough about mycogone to call it out but that big ball with metabolites looks a lot like it.

The reason the pins are on the wall is because that’s the only place with clean myc.

It was a cool surprise to wake up and see the mushrooms poking out of the lid but when I opened it up it was like looking at a whole other universe hahaha. I swear oysters are sentient!

Upon further research, I am quite certain I am dealing with wet bubble.  There is definitely oozing amber drops coming off of the larger clumps.  Bummer. Is this going to be a perpetual, long-term contamination of my grow space? If I get healthy looking fruits out of these tubs are they okay to eat?

Yes the fruit will be fine. Dehydrate them and you’ll be good

:whathesaid: Right now you shouldn't have to worry about moving your tub out but sooner or later it'll succumb to trich. Thats when you move it

Thanks for all your input! This was my first time posting here and I’m amazed at how good of a resource this crowd is.

Also, here’s an update. Theses little guys really want to live... they are almost all growing horizontally off of the walls. Despite it being a bummer because of the infection, it’s actually pretty cool looking. Think I’ll still get some okay fruits outta here!
