What does this mean?
    #26603379 - 04/15/20 04:15 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

“ Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.
--Jac O'keeffe”

I found it under someone’s sig, I think JSB, and wondered what it meant. It’s been giving me some trouble because if I am nothing then there is no one to take care of.

I accept your premise but reject your conclusion.

But seriously though I don’t think other people here know what it means. It doesn’t seem very empowering

It means don't let life knock you down.  Be who you want to be and don't worry about others.

...and if it does learn from it and make sure the things you let get you down or get you down go away, or build something from it. If it destroyed you/something in you it's best that it did and you learned from it and/or it got destroyed.

Nice quote Thanatos

It means what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...sometimes stranger too but meh...

It's like I tell my kids when they get hurt and it's the worst pain they've ever felt.  "You'll be tougher now and next time you get hurt and it isn't this bad, you'll handle it better because you've had worse than this happen to you before"

I don't think there's anything wrong with having/letting life knock the shit out me sometimes.  How can you know the depths of your strengths if you're never tested?

That's my take away from it anyway..hope it helps

But it says that I am nothing, and in knowing that I can't "be destroyed" but then that also means that there is nothing to take care of or look after, and that applies to other people too.

I think you misunderstand the author's intent.  Nowhere does he say "don't care for others."

There's also something within the quote that I would like to underscore, when the author states: "Let it be Seen that you are nothing." Obviously the author has in mind that life -- i.e. people -- will try to get you down.  Why would he say "seen" if he did not have other people in mind?  But show them that they do not bother you, and your life will go easier.  It's referencing people who want to hurt you, bro, and not that you should not care for others.

But it says there is nothing to gain so that essentially makes life pointless.

It alludes to the same point I made in my first comment on this thread.  The author is not saying there is nothing to gain in life at all.

I think its saying that people should let go of the idea that our lives are "worthy" is my take on it

Feels pretty bleak to me

The last statement is confusing "It will only destroy what you are not". If the first statement is true, "We are Nothing", how can it destroy what we are not when we are nothing to begin with?

:strokebeard:

Paradoxical statments are the most confusing....
