Do you only dose when your set is on?
    #26601665 - 04/14/20 09:38 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

What's up my beautiful people:rockon:

So, these past few weeks or so I've been just kind of sad. Not depressed - but I just think everything going on in the world right now, and being unemployed and not knowing when my works going to call me back has been kind of messing with me. I'm not sure if that's the root of the issue but I do think that is playing a vital role.

Also, lately I've really been craving companionship. I made a very personal thread a few weeks ago and I think that's a lot of the reason I'm hurting myself in finding that. I don't NEED a relationship, but I would definitely like one. I do a lot of cool stuff, mostly by myself though (especially with all of this social distancing stuff going on).

Like I said, I'm not "depressed" - but I'm just in one of those sad moods lately. And it's not like I feel sad all day, I am happy as can be.. but throughout the day I'll have this feeling over loneliness take over me and it's hard to shake (like right now which is EXACTLY why I'm making this thread).

I've been using this forum lately as a way of putting my thoughts into words and shooting it out to such a beautiful community that I'm extremely thankful for without any judgement - it's been helping not carrying the weight on my shoulders.

My last trip was extremely difficult. It brought upon tons of sadness and I was very hard on myself. I've been wanting to dose again, even though my last trip was difficult and it felt as if I was being bullied by the mushrooms and it was brutal. It wasn't until after the trip where the light felt like it was shining. I'm just not sure if it's better to wait for this wave of sadness to pass (which who knows when it will with how things are at the moment).

I feel like I always give the mushrooms the upper-hand into smashing me into pieces when I know deep down inside I'm sad. They've been great to me - but that last trip brought me into tears and brought me to my knees in cringe worthy emotions toward myself.

Anyway - I'm just curious to how you guys go about your trips. Even if you had ideal scenario with being alone and a great setting - if your set has been off, do you bite the bullet and hope for the best? Or do you wait until things have calmed down in your head a little bit?

Thanks ahead of times ladies/gents - I love you guys.

Stay safe & healthy Shroomery <3

To me, using mushrooms is a sort of illusion test.  Do i get caught up by them without seeing its true nature, or do i remain lucid of the fact of its true nature and transcend the illusory situations that appear, while using skillful means to discern what I can from them, and in doing so - sharpen my mind and cleanse my heart?

The canvas and content of it being exactly like a Rorschach test.  With everything appearing within it just being in my head - but via the drug - its non dual, the vessels contents are spilled.  Fundamentally no front or back.  Illumination and action are simultaneous  .  With no one in your head but you, everything in it is an expression of yourself.  I begin knowing this, just like a dream so to is a trip.  Set is not always the same, but its always in light of the aforementioned being in mind via a honest to god moment of meditation where i cease all self deception that I can be possibly aware of.  After that, and a few other personal moments and preparations or rituals, I begin - knowing what will come of it is my own making and karmic conditioning, just like dreaming.  I reap what I have sown.

How things play out experientially as mind phenomena is never not a reflection of myself.  It can be distorted, warped, delusional, but its reflection all right.  How the trip goes is often a reflection of my own psycho-physical state since the last trip, if I’ve been hard on myself -  or too lackadaisical in regards to following my moral code, that gets reflected in the trip.  But i do it, because self-sprung non dual awareness is like a clear light that illuminates mind phenomena, allowing for an about face when reflecting upon myself, the ability to institute a measure of how I have been doing and how I’m doing now based on moral precepts I hold.

Seen that way, a trip can be an opportunity for me to begin to change the things that need changing about myself and the things in my life, and to do what needs to be done in order to do so.  It is an inner job, carefully examining ones inner mental state of conditioned thoughts and feelings and attitudes which lead to a particular way of acting and being in the world.  It’s from observing in a nonchalant natural state of cool headed relaxation that I view my own thoughts, speech, and actions during the trip, doing so in order that I can bring balance to myself.

It can begin by recognizing i have been under the spell of my own making, and by doing so there is an instant moment of space from which to see the conceptual prison I have been operating from within.  When seen in a trip, due to its nature.  It’s hallucinatory nature.  I can leave the junk within the illusion of the experience, and after the trip ends, step foot into the relative world of day to day without the previous hinderances.  Allowing the mundane relative world to be seen for what it is, mysteriously and immanently transcendent - and that is enough for me to get back on the wagon and continue my life in my brief transit here.

Life is the best part, tripping while alive is just a chance for lucidity to get something unseen unstuck so that the song doesn’t continue skipping, allowing ones life to continue unfolding naturally as its own unique song sung among the greater symphony of celestial music.

That's where I'm with it as well honestly. I had a rude awakening of what I need to change (or incorporate) into my personality in order for me to find what I want. It's not easy because I have built up a habit and we are all creatures of habits.

But, I know my set has not been the best lately - and even though the mushrooms did guide me into what I do need to change - I still feel this loneliness that's not going to change until I fill the void. Though, I'm not sure if it's the loneliness that's kickstarting these sad feelings. But it does seem to kick in harder when I feel lonely - so I do see a correlation between the two.

I really do enjoy tripping. Recreational and for an internal journey. I mostly always take them for both. Beginning of the trip recreational - and then the mushrooms always send me down into a spiral over self reflecting thoughts and actions I've done in the past - which is usually always the most difficult times of my trips. It's almost though as of lately - I almost anticipate that the mushrooms are going to bully me because I don't have the best set going on.

And the trip is horrible (the way they degrade and belittle me at times) - but after I feel like I was rinsed and I feel fresh (especially after typing of trip reports and getting thoughts on my trips) has been nice putting my thoughts into words.

It's almost as if I should just wait to trip again so I don't put myself through the bullying and bullshit to only feel refreshed after being punched in the consciousness. But - then again there may be a BEAUTIFUL trip where I accept everything and things just fall into place. Taking mushrooms in general, is just a gamble and a mindgame.

Only you know your own heart and mind as it is for you.  Not to seek the truth outside of ourselves so that we may instantly enter the right way, is a saying from a sutra that comes to mind when I t read your post.  It’s your call on what to do.  But it looks like, from reading your post, you’ve already known the answer.

I can only make conjecture via the internet.  Fully heart to heart cannot happen here like in person.  Best to you whatever you end up doing

While a full psychedelic dose of  5-10grams is something, sometimes a micro dose .15g -  .35. g is enough to “do the trick”.

I generally only take a full strength trip about 6 times a year,  ill take a micro dose once every month or every other month, or just skip it all together depending on the year.

Hope I’ve been helpful.

I’ve started changing my mind on this aspect over the last year or so, vibe_enthusiast.

For years I’ve struggled with the anxiety; I’ll plan a trip for weeks, then in the preceding week, the nerves would ramp up, until eventually, sometimes just as the glass of tea is at my lips, I’ll duck out for whatever reason and not trip.

Then there have been recent discussions on set on here; it can be almost. A 50:50 split between those who agree set needs to be good before tripping, and those that say tripping when set is off is the best time to use psychedelics.

I recently had one of those “almost not drinking the tea” trips, but pressed ahead. I did not “learn” anything from the trip, but woke up the next day not feeling depressed, and like my brain had been reset.

I don’t know what is deeply affecting you, vibe, it does sound more like chronic melancholy rather than clinical depression, but I’m no expert. My struggles have been with depression, so I cannot comment on whether the mushrooms would reset a melancholy brain.

And the current climate is not helping. I feel your pain, brother.

❤️

The trick is to eat LSD instead. Mushrooms are pretty lame in comparison.

I've taken mushrooms when I wasn't in the best set to do them. It's always difficult in those situations, but I realize that it's the mushroom showing me what I need to work on. That said, I always have a great amount of anxiety and I've not tripped when it came up simply because I was afraid of what the trip might bring to the forefront of my mind. I feel the same way as you brother, things will get better tho.

Tripping with a bad set and my usual setting has more often than not snapped me out of a depressive/melancholy phase, I get reminded that there's still a lot to be happy about in life even though life usually isn't anywhere near what I hoped it would be when I was little. The only times I've had "bad" trips is when both set and setting were off and I didn't prepare mentally.

A couple weeks ago during the come up I had the idea to listen to The Long Song from Doctor Who:

The song is beautiful, the lyrics are perfect for a sad/depressed tripper who has given up on being happy and has fallen asleep at the wheel. Try it out sometime!

I'm fairly new to interpreting the meaning and depths of trips, but I'm learning. One thing I've gathered from my "bad" trips was acceptance. It's been studied through fMRI with participants on psilocybin to show how the default (almost consciousness gatekeeper) portion of your brain isn't functioning. This allows your mind to access all stored information and cross-reference experiences at will, unfiltered.

I guess my thought is that if you have a strong appreciation for the profound understanding/experiences during your enlightening/happy trips, then you must learn to appreciate the unfiltered harder experiences. That is to be grateful for opened eyes into deeper understanding. Sounded preachy...but you get it.:smirk:

I go balls deep no matterthe situation

Some of my best trips were high doses during shitty times and places in my life. Never regret dosing.

Ever.

What was your last dose for the difficult trip?

After some difficult trips if i felt the need to go back in i just taper the dose down a bit.

More than once ive been a bit worried or anxious tripping again after a difficult one only to find the trip very easy and enjoyable, quite the opposite of what i feared

Yes, and no.

I would call your current somewhat generally sad emotional context a positive, realistic aspect of your mindset. (you just think it's poor mindset, but it's actually reasonable)

Dose comfortably (i.e. no challenging extremes) and I think your result will be very healing.

let us know how it goes.

I think what you're calling set is what I usually refer to as my environment. If so, I not only am absolute about making sure my environment is exactly the way I want it, but I will happily postpone a trip if anything is off that I can't make right. For instance, I intended to trip this coming Saturday. However, the weather looks a little off, and it looks like it will rain. In and of itself, no problem. However, I prefer to trip when its sunny and dry because I want the option to get on my bicycle and just go, go go. (More on that in a minute). So I decided on the fly that Sunday, which should have nice weather, looked like the better day for me to trip.

But I am meticulous about preparing my environment for a trip. My home has to be spotless and clutter-free. I have to have plenty of easily eaten and already prepared foods in the fridge in case I need to eat. I have to do an inspection on my bicycle, put air in the tires, and make sure everything is good. I have to have finished any real workouts I intended to do for that day. My guitar at the ready in case I feel like playing, etc..

I have also learned through a few bad experiences years ago, that I won't trip without a variety of what I like to call "escape routes." I always have an exit strategy for a trip, in case things start to get too real, too intense, and too disturbingly hard to handle. My bicycle is one of my preferred escape route. Obviously I would never get behind the wheel of my car while tripping. lol If I get too uncomfortable, I need what I like to call "grounding activities," things I can use to pull myself back down to Earth and take my control back. Mind you, this is a last resort, and only for very extreme circumstances, as I am actually VERY interested in what the universe wants to tell me, using shrooms as a vehicle. But sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I guess.

You also mentioned something about giving the mushrooms the upper-hand. I see the wisdom in this. I do it myself. However, unlike many, perhaps even most people in this forum, I put ANY substance I take into my body on a very short leash.  Meaning, yeah, you want the upper hand? Okay, cool. But only to a point. I firmly believe that giving myself over to a substance so completely and absolutely, even for a short time, is completely unacceptable and not something I want in my life. This is't a judgement of how anyone else choose to live, or an admonishment for anyone else to adopt my philosophy, by the way.

I know I am the minority here in that, so please take what I say with the proverbial grain of salt, because it may not apply to you.

No LSA, vibe is using “set” in the correct way.

When people talk of set and setting, they mean: set - mental headspace going into the trip, setting - environment in which you take the mushrooms.

I personally don’t think of giving the mushrooms the upper hand. I think of it more of accepting what they are trying to first do to my body and brain (switch it off), and then subsequently teach me, once I have accepted, or in vibe’s words, given the mushrooms the other hand. It’s that moment when you decide to stop trying to resist the often very unsettling transformation that is going on when your default mode network is being turned off. It’s a matter of perspective dude.

I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what I said regarding set, unless I am misunderstanding what you and he were saying of course. I was saying that the set is the setting, not just my mental state, but the physical attributes of my environment that I can control before I begin a journey. Again, I’m not sure how that’s different than what he was saying. As far as your other points, I’m not sure how what you were saying is different than my giving myself over to the experience, but only on my own terms. My point was to say that I’m not one of those Psychonauts who gives over unequivocal absolute control to any psychedelic substance. I keep them basically on a short leash was my point.

Recently, I've wanted to try some LSD specifically when I'm really sad or depressed or in a bad mood, just to experiment and see the effect. But I have a feeling it'll be a trainwreck. But you never know. Some of Hendrix's lyric suggest he used to dose specifically when sad/depressed. On the other hand, LSD might increase suicidal behavior, so I can't exactly advocate it.

I think proper set and setting is critically important, but I'm still curious about it's effects when taken in an improper mindset.

Often if something devastating happens to me, i dose

Setting is most important for me.

I want to be sure my physical space is safe and conducive for a good trip.

And although I believe set is very important (specifically the emotional/spiritual state one is in), I find that I indulge in mushrooms because I want to fix/face those internal turmoils. So it’s almost necessary that my set isn’t perfect, because mushrooms help me with the struggle.

Of course there are exceptions (such as intense anger or if I haven’t slept in days). In those instances I’ll hold off.

It was late when I was posting, so I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick! And I haven’t had my first coffee of the morning, so it still may be too early to post, lol, but I’ll try.

Set is mental, setting is physical. You “seemed” to be saying “set” when you weee actually referring to “setting”. Either way, I think we all know what you meant, I meant. I will use mushrooms when my “set” is not ideal, for example if my depression has reared its head; historically I would have then avoided mushrooms until my “set” improved. These days, I use mushrooms to provide the reset, the sort of hard disk defrag of my brain. My setting is always consistent; pop, incense, music, blanket, candles, psychedlic safe place.

Have a great day, dude, and hope you enjoy the mushrooms this weekend. I cannot wait for some Mazatapec tonight, the last (fresh) trip was amazing and very transcendental....
