Remove that hairy cake, it's contaminated.

Thanks. Thoughts on the 1st 2 tubs that have been in for 48 hours? Keep it covered longer or crack it?

Keep the tub covered? It should already have fae holes.

i thought this was the water tub TEK where you do not do FAE holes. You keep it covered for 48 hours then when you see mycelium growth you crack it it for the FAE. Everything in this thread says to not do the FAE holes via the SGFC TEK. Am I missing somehting?

If you don't have holes then you should have cracked the tub for fae but now already.

And what do you consider “by now”? Is it the fact that they’ve been in for 48 hours or that they look the way they do?

We don't differentiate between fruiting and colonizing, go straight to fruiting conditions.

I certainly respect your input and opinions. But I’m just wondering why does the tek clearly say on the first page here that you cover it for 48 hours and restrict FAE

Look I'm not that clued up on water tek, no problem admitting I have never done one. I just know what I know and see no reason to wait 48hrs.

Honestly just out of date. There’s no difference between colonization and fruiting conditions.
I used a water tub for a couple of months and never sealed it up.

I agree with them.. it's best to just stick with fruiting conditions the whole time..
As far as my water tub goes.. I just keep the lid on without any holes drilled.. it seems to work well in my situation.. if I crack the lid, things get too dry.. my cakes get enough passive FAE with the lid closed, but there is definitely a horrible seal around the lid of my tub..

Yeah. Bad seal on your water tub lid is actually favorable, honestly.

Ya. I don't know why they even make a seal when half of them don't even work. But yep, great for this application

When I had it sealed (my seal is not airtight either, and there are 2 small holes in each side where the handle attaches) I could see natural condensation on all the insides of the tub. I cracked it today and came home and all that condensation is gone. Would you say that is too dry? Thinking of going back to covered with the imperfect seal

I'd keep it sealed and just keep an eye on things.. you'll get other indicators if you need to increase FAE once the fruits come in

What are those indicators that show low FAE?

long/skinny pins, and "fuzzy-feet" are both good indicators you should evaluate your FAE.. just keep in mind that both could also be genetic traits.. I have a couple cultures that get fuzzy feet even in an environment with higher FAE.
When in doubt.. take some pictures and ask questions.

Just finished reading this entire thread. A big Thank You to everyone who contributed; much good stuff here.
I didn't see a lot of discussion about lighting. How important is it during the initial "sealed-up" stage? I assume you do want regular lighting during the grow phase. As I understand it, a 6500k "daylight" bulb is the thing to get, and run it on a 12/12 cycle, correct?
