You can use the exact same coir you use for shoeboxes as you use for cakes.
If you have a 5 gallon bucket, I recommend making it in advanced and just having it around. It lasts a long time in a sealed bucket.

I second this. I just make a lot at once and keep it in a 5 gallon bucket sealed with a tight lid. Stores months+ fine and use in shoeboxes months later with zero contams.

First BRF cake I made by cloning a pin. Best pin set I've had on cakes! Loving the coir casing

What's the difference between using vermiculite or coir for the roll?

Personal preference! I recommend coir, but really I recommend trying both and seeing which you like more. I’ve gotten great flushes from both. Try them out.
I tend to start with one, then add the other for flush two. It’s easy to roll a coir cake in verm. It’s easy to stick some coir to colonized verm, too. I scrape most of the loose stuff off before the dunk, but the coir tends to stick a bit more. It gets colonized sometimes.

Lol! Cozy myc is cool too! Yup it's really preference. It's easier for me to read the surface conditions of the coir casing.

I'm going to whip up some of those coir brf hybrids tonight. I just read about them in the mushroom breeder AMA thread. Very enticing.

I actually have significant trouble seeing when verm is properly hydrated. Not so at all with coir. That’s a big plus.

I have a question about this tek. I have about a dozen cakes, in various stages of consolidation. I put 4 of them in the water tub, with lid closed as per instructions. The other 8 cakes will need to be in the lid closed phase as well, but the first 4 cakes will be in fruiting conditions by then. My question is, could I have just one tub for priming the mycelium for fruiting (lid closed), and a different tub for fruiting? (lid cracked open) Would transporting cakes from one tub to the other have any detrimental effects? Thanks in advance for the answer!

I don't think transportation will do anything to your cakes. The way I imagine it is: you move the cakes from incubation to fruiting environments. The only slight setback I had from moving cakes around, was that I squeezed them too hard when I was handling them and it left some bruising.

Thanks, I didn't really foresee a problem, but it's always good to get affirmation that I am not about to fuck something up!
