I'm used to having completely white substrates in the jar when they're colonized but yours looks like it's mostly dark brown? but you know this better, also I don't see any pins but maybe it's harder to see from the pic.
BTW what do you mean you let the cake "sit for too long"? During colonization inside a jar or in a fruiting chamber? When did you add coir to the cake? Do you have pics of the cake itself?

I was just messing around, didn’t expect anything from this cake…
I mixed up some coir and wbs in the container, pc for 90 minutes, noc up with spore syringe, it colonized almost 100 but looked like it was drying out so I think maybe adding some wet coir to the top help it, that didn’t help so i think maybe pouring in sterile water will help it. so I added way too much water but it eventually absorbed it all (like 4 days to soak it all up)…
Just let it sit there for another week and half now it has a few pins that aren’t visible in the photos due to the heavy condensation. I thought the white dots were knots but maybe not…? i’ll share a photo when I birth it….

End of day 2 in water tub:

I honestly can't see too much difference, and no further action on top, but it looks a bit more full compared to yesterday.
Think this might be a few more days yet...

I can actually see that its colonizing more and more, the little one almost looks perfect. But you still want to have much more colonization on top of the cakes because that will be mainly where the water droplets will land when you create surface conditions. Coir that isn't colonized can not hold water droplets because it had the opposite effect it soakt thlm immediately and this is not what you want, only myc and coir that had myc strands inside of it will hold water droplets on its surface.

Nice yeah looks like it should go into a fruiting chamber right away. Maybe be a quick little mist as well right before.

I'm probably using the wrong thread now, but since there isn't much growth on top (still nothing today) - can I assume its because the main direction of growth in the uncle ben packet was sideways? The 'top' of the cake was fairly dense and flat, and the coir on the sides has seen excellent growth, but the top has not been investigated:

I might try rotating the cake next time

I see, well that would be a bummer if the cake isn't fully colonized, the substrates must be fully colonized for this procedure to work I'm afraid. Anyway, how does that big cake look on the underside compared to the top? The small one is good I just know it it will colonize more on top just give it one more day

End of day on day 4 of tub tek:
Have not opened the box during that time. The humidity inside is intense, impressive!
Here's the small cake:
big cake top side:
big cake bottom (very similar imho)
And back in the tub with a rack this time:

The coir on top and bottom is dry as fuck, despite humidity inside being about 85%, 22C. Do I need to do anything? lid is back on and sealed, but I'm happy to try misting if needed or anything else.
EDIT: went to 99% after a few hours in the tub

I think it might be time to introduce surface and fruiting conditions. The small cake looks perfect the big one looks aight for now. When you spray on the little beads just make sure to spray a little bit at a time and then check up close and then a spray on a little bit more and do so incrementally until you have accumulated the desired amount of beads.
Just don't expect the beads to form as much on the uncolonized parts since they will mostly get absorbed so you don't overmist those, but since the coir layer a bit dry on the big cake it shouldn't hurt to add a little moisture to those parts. Please post an update when the surface conditions are in place and you can flip tee lid also when you're done

end of day, tub-tek day 5:
Large cake - weighed in at 233g Small cake - 28g
So I sprayed them down with a fine mister:

lid is now off and skewed just a little off the edge. will check again later but humidity is 95%.

not too much has changed but it's obvious the outer body is drying within 5-6 hours of being sprayed down, depending on how airy the room is that day. The box lid isn't open very much, just 3mm or so. 19-21C (66-70F). So I keep misting and keeping hoping. Does that sound normal?

Definitely sounds like your tub gets lots of fresh air (possibly very dry air?) now it's nothing I would worry about, I'd just increase misting accordingly to be able to maintain the water droplets on the substrates.

I also live by the coast and outside humidity is between 80-100%RH but inside by home is 26%RH if I don't run both humidifiers at the same time. But I'm guessing you don't need to heat your home
Have you measured the humidity inside your home btw?

well fuck me

^^ so that is today, day 9, of water tub tek. I had to check my eyes because I swear they were not there in the morning. Either way, last night I accidently left the lid off on the whole box, and when I checked in the morning it was dry so misted and put the lid on again with a crack - assume my overnight error shouldn't be assumed to be important step?

Ta-Da!
How many days now since going into the Water Tub?
Edit: OK I read now it's been 9 days in the FC, and the shrooms have probably been forming for a few days which confirms what I've been saying for years now, the Water Tub is a cakes best friend

Once they get bigger I'll make an infographic to consolidate my own learning so far, but I'm still 100% amazed the mexicana is growing for me. Also probably not going to continue with uncle ben tek, but here's proof it can work
@Mateja - I owe you a bottle of scotch
I will post updates as they grow
