How many of you grow commercially, are you profitable?

What’s your market like? What do you produce per week? What are your biggest challenges?

I was profitable before coronavirus. We didn't start full time commercial growing until September last year. Been producing about 80lbs to 100lbs a week. Oct and nov weren't great but we were still figuring things out and getting clients but Dec, Jan, and Feb were great. We were really kicking ass then this shit. The first couple of weeks after the shut down were really bad. It's gotten better. We've adjusted.

We're able to be very profitable because we do it all from pertri dish to mushroom. My biggest challenge is just the amount of work. It's a lot. Other than that no troubles. Had 7 years experience with mycology before I did this though. I imagine if someone jumped into this at large scale with little or no experience it would get messy quick

Might I ask what you expect to make in a good year in profit?

What are you growing stromrider? That amount doesn't seem like something to live off, even if it were porcini where I live.

We were bringing in around 1200 a week in sales. We were paying ourselves about 800 a week and leaving the rest in business account for expenses. Our expenses weren't that high but wanted to build up a good amount of money in the business account. Our overhead is super low so it was enough. We're working out of our basement. Also our house and both vehicles are paid for so I have that going for me. I sold a lot of special mushrooms before this if you know what I'm saying 😉

We were only doing one farmers market a week but are now splitting up and going to 2. It's working. A lot of people are coming to the market. Everyone is basically cooking for themselves. Since we get more for the mushrooms at the market than restaurants it's worked out pretty good the past couple of weeks

We always grow oysters and lions mane and usually keep kings and pioppino as well

Nice! That’s good to hear, got any pics of your setup? My buddy and I are thinking about doing the farmers market thing when this virus stuff is over.

Way to be adaptable Strom, low overhead too, very smart.  Glad you are making it through this, we all may need to find ways to adapt to change in the coming months/years.

Thanks. It was quite a kick in the nuts to get running so well so fast and then this happen. Luckily the farmers market sales have been good and our restaurants are starting to call again. Apparently everyone is tired of cooking and ordering more and more take out from gourmet restaurants.
