On pasteurization
    #26600781 - 04/14/20 03:00 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, I'm looking to pasteurize coir (80%) and verm (20%) in jars inside a big pot but I dont' have a meat thermometer or a slim enought thermometer to pass through the hole of the lid and measure the center of the jar (cannot buy one now because of the quarantine), but what I do have is this another device, a big termomether which could measure the temperature of the hot water. The procedure I'm planning to do is: let the water get to 160-170, then put the jars, and let them like 1,5hs. Would this be okay? I'm assuming the temperature of the center of the jars would equal the temperature of the surrounding hot water in matter of minutes, but let anyways more than an hour pasteurizing. Let me know if I'm doing something wrong please!

CV doesn't need pasteurization because coir doesn't harbor any microbes. You can just boil some water, toss it in there, and let it sit until it's cool. Some people here even consider that overkill, but I've read that myc likes cooked coir better.

If you can get your water to a stable 160 you should need about 2.5-3 hours IME.
If you over run the time it’s basically fine for coir based subs.

I use a nu wave at 160 with a lid on my pot. Runs 2 hours if my sub (usually CV mix) is warm from the hydration water or 2.5 h when it’s room temp. I usually set it and go to bed, jars cool down when timer shuts it off.  You don’t have to be super precise with coir as others said it can be sterilized and works fine.
