Oddly fruiting! * 1
    #26600750 - 04/14/20 02:45 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I'm using coco coir in my fruting chamber, layer of that followed by grated cakes followed by another layer and so on..

This is the 4th box done this way and this time the mycelium have minimally spread but I've already had some growers! I decided to take them out of the darkness and give light to those coming through. About 4/5 grew and further pins didn't come of much.

I have since shut out the light and more pins have come through.. Any ideas why this is happening? Why the early growth before the chamber has colonised and why they only seem to be coming of something in dark/reduced light conditions??

Contaminants sometimes lead to early pinning. Also, you don’t need to colonize them in darkness you can just set them wherever, I think the darkness pins are just coincidence unless it’s some contaminant species from the dark side

Ah OK thanks. Would you also recommend using half pint jars rather than pints? Have always used pints and results haven't been amazing but its also hard to have a complete sterile environment!

Also is there a better technique/method than BRF cakes? Have had a few unsuccessful flushes

If you have a pressure cooker, BRF should be fine. I recommend using a lid tek like this if you continue to get contams.
The silicone injection port allows you to maintain a ~sterile environment after pressure cooking until you inoculate, and helped me get started with good success.

I mean bulk growing has better yields so yeah grain bulk growing...

If full pints work for ya, keep using them. Ive done full pints in the past, takes forever for the PF cakes to colonize with such a large jar, sometimes they stall out. Its best to use half pints to avoid stalling the jars out.
