They don't need cold, they need it to not be hot.

I would sow asap. poppies can withstand frost fine in the sprout and seedling stages, however they hate high temperatures in these stages. Once they get into the cabbage stage they start to get more and more frost sensitive.

The only other thing I can think is that the area I put them gets indirect morning light. It is southern exposer but they are next to a fence. but realistically the soil probably wasn't kept moist enough. The sropharia in that bed are growing small and with cracked caps.

Gorgeous . Such a pure-white white lol. Like the epitome of "white" lol. Heavenly.
I'm guessing I'm still about 3 weeks away from my first blooms.
I gave the soil/plants some fermented nettle/mallow tea yesterday.

I heard nettles are good stuff. The solid white cultivars are some of my favorites for sure.

Anyone notice this? dry latex from certain cultivars has a pleasant sweet smell, while latex from other cultivars has more of a bitter narcotic smell.

I haven't grown the plant enough or more than one cultivar to comment on that. This year I am growing two different cultivars though.
Over the years I have heard some folks mention that the latex/O they had did have a sweet/floral essence about it....The plants I grew last year I didn't lance for any latex so I didn't get the chance to take a smell.
Is it "normal" for pods to kinda sweat/ooze out small amounts of latex on their own?...The pods on the plants I grew last year seemed to have tiny little specs & spots of what I'm assuming is latex that was seeping/oozing out of them onto the surface>>>>

I have noticed that occasionally, I always assumed that it may have been caused by insects or something, but I never saw any visible insects associated with it so that may not be the case.
I'd like to point out some commonly available cultivars that are quite good for anyone new to poppy growing or looking to expand their collection. This is not a measured or scientific comparison, just my own opinions after growing these cultivars.
1. Peshawar: This is a traditional latex cultivar from the Peshawar region of Pakistan. Solid white flowers and white seeds Very fast flowering. Large pods with good latex yield. Medium to high potency. Maybe a bit more susceptible to fungus than other varieties. easy to find, sold by multiple vendors online.
2. Zahir: This is a traditional latex cultivar from Afghanistan. I've only grown this one a couple times. Purple flowers with dark purple basal blotch, blue seed. I would put it in the same category as the Peshawar in terms of latex yield and potency. Also available from multiple vendors online.
3. Black Swan: very common ornamental variety, available all around the US at nurseries and hardware stores. I believe the poppy openmind posted above is a black swan. Quite a respectable potency for such a widely available plant. I've even seen starter plants of these for sale in a nursery in california. cons small pods and low latex yield.
4. Lauren's grape: Also very easy to find ornamental cultivar. Similar to black swan in terms of having high potency, small pods and low latex yield

Yes. It is a beautiful plant but worthless if you're after alkaloids.
