Contaminated Grain Spawn

I have a Grain Spawn that was looking great, but right when I was ready to move it to bulk substrate I noticed contamination. Was wondering if anyone recognized this contamination and knows what I may have down wrong? Also is there anything I can do with this spawn or do I need to throw it away? Put on soil or old log outside?
2 of my other jars look like they are starting to show something similar. Thinking I didn't let my grain dry enough or I need more venting. Any suggestions are helpful

The pic is really bad. Are you referring to the moist bacterial grains or is there something else happening on the left part of the pic?

Yeah sorry for some reason pics from my phone are too big to upload so I had to use my crappy computer camera. But yes I think it is the black bacteria on the left. Weird thing is they were fine for days then just popped up, I didn't add any moisture, but my jars do like they have more condensation. Maybe I'm not venting enough/ crammed my polyphil in too tight?

Yes definitely don't open those. Just toss them. Maybe if you're willing to risk getting spores on you, you could bury grains somewhere outside where there is shade. But definitely dont open those inside your home, if its mold the spores will go everywhere.
How did you inoculate them? Agar/syringe? If it was agar, and the agar was clean. Did you PC them long enough? Because if PC time was good, and it is mold, then it got hitched after the PC cycle.

Don't throw your jars away. But definitely throw the contents away.

So I did syringe agar, then cut a peice of my agar and put it in the grain spawn. Agar was clean. The grains spawns looked really good up until recentyl and were at about 70-80% colonized. I'm wondering if its possible the higher colonization lead to higher moisture and rpomoted the mold? Or is it normal for contaminated grain not to show until this late. Either way I will PC my grain spawn a bit longer this next time (also I forgot to let my PC steam off for the 10 minutes before pressurizing it, I'm thinking this might be the culprit)

Yeah definitely vent your PC until nothing but steam is coming out. As far as your jars you want your poly fill to be as tight as possible, you’re trying to protect against contaminant spores which are tiny. Poly does work as a filter but it’s not the best. You could have maybe not killed everything in the PC, or a spore could’ve gotten through your filter any time after.
You won’t get contamination from too much moisture although that scenario will allow bacteria, that’s usually around somewhere, to thrive.
So steam vent, 15 psi for 90 minutes, good filters, proper moisture content and boom. Mushrooms.
Also when you go spore to agar, you want to transfer at least once from that plate before going to grain.

I keep a syringe nearby to inject soap, alcohol or bleach into jars before opening and discarding contents.
Id be damned if i throw away materials especially not a jar/lid.

Yeah I did a few plate transfers and the plates were showing pin wheels so I think they were good strain isolation.
If not polyfil do you have suggestions for filters that are cheap/easy?

Probably not isolation, but that isn't a big deal, it doesn't sound like your mold came from the agar.

Isolation from possible ride alongs on the print/syrn though, so yeah probably not from the agar.
Synthetic filter disks are great. They cost about a dollar a piece and you can use a whole one if you want, or trace out 7 circles using a quarter and cut them out = 7 filters for a buck oh five. Scuff the surface of your lid and use high temp RTV to stick them over the GE hole.

Throwing away entire contaminated jars is the dumbz. Nobody should be doing that, its glass for christ sake.

Just depends on your options. Makes more sense to toss it out than open it in your house and spread spores all over. If you don't have the option of dumping it outside tossing it might be best, it's not like jars cost that much.

Those spores were already there if you got the contamination. Your job is to prevent them from getting into your work.
RR was working next to a big mouldy wall IIRC.

Thank you for this tip, I had not thought of injecting jars with bleach.

not true, not when a single jar could potentially hinder all future grows. These are potentially life threatening bacteria, mold, fungus. You really think a 1 dollar jar and lid is worth opening for a beginner that doesnt know how to handle it correctly?
If you are worried about the costs of jars and lids, maybe its time to rethink why you are doing this in the first place. Just my 2 cents.
The guy above gave a great idea of injecting the jar first and letting it sit, then i would only ever open that outside.
