While some studies have evaluated a variety of face masks in hospitals or other heath care contexts, relatively few have tested whether face masks are effective in the community — and the ones that do exist have been inconsistent or have not observed large effects.
It's not the journal article I referenced in the previous message -- for the life of me I have tried to find it. The article nonetheless explains away some of the confusion I was experiencing. It seems the data regarding the efficacy of even regular surgical masks in providing protection against SARS-CoV-2 is still questionable, as there seems to be conflicting results depending upon the studies conducted. That's why I said a meta-analysis would be cool to see. Ah, fuck it! I guess it's better to wear even a 2-ply cotton bandana than nothing, yeah? Even if the protection it offers, from my understanding of the various scientific literature, is minimal.
https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/covid-19-face-mask-advice-explained/
Edit: If you have the time or desire, I suggest reading the article I linked to this message in full, as it explains in more precise detail the original point I was alluding to. I'm still confused as hell based off the conflicting scientific literature.
Re-edit: Some more confirmation bias (lol) from yours truly: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/commentary-masks-all-covid-19-not-based-sound-data
A short excerpt from the second link: Quote:
While the data supporting the use of surgical masks as PPE in real-world settings are limited, the two meta-analyses and the most recent randomized controlled study51 combined with evidence of moderate filter efficiency and complete lack of facepiece fit lead us to conclude that surgical masks offer very low levels of protection for the wearer from aerosol inhalation. There may be some protection from droplets and liquids propelled directly onto the mask, but a faceshield would be a better choice if this is a concern.
So, faceshields?

800+ people dying every day in cities all around the world 1.5 million cases and approaching 90 thousand dead (closer to 100k apparently). Ebola has to this day 11,000 deaths, Swine flu 18 thousand you comparing covid19 with these diseases is reckless, splitting in the faces of the dead and grieving and actively part of a group of people who WANT to pretend those things are comparable. Also smallpox has a vaccine and you can get a flu shot for the flu plus ive had a lot of friends that have had the flu and I haven't gotten it once plus high risk patients often can be detected quickly and treated it with centuries of medicine. In short you endanger all of our lives and the possibility of a normal to get back by talking out your ass like that.

The flu has killed around 50,000 in the U.S. for several years now. H1N1 variants are included in that. The flu also killed 50-100 million people while infecting an estimated 500+ million a hundred years ago. Roughly a third of the world back then.
Let's just hope the corona doesn't become a seasonal virus we have to continue to fight and let's hope a vaccine comes sooner rather than later.
We don't want to fight H1N1, H3N2, other influenza and sars cov2 every year.

Man, I got the flu in 2015 and it FUCKED me up. I was sick for nearly two weeks, constant puking, aches, fever, lethargy, etc.. Not as serious as your situation (I'm sorry to hear about that BTW that must've been awful) but God damn, I thought I was gonna die; going to the hospital crossed my mind quite a few times during those two weeks. Shit was awful.

I had several co-workers travel to china and return early January. One of them had a horrible fucking cough and fever for a few weeks. A few people around the lab got a little bug shortly after. I had a sore throat and general malaise for maybe a week. Im hoping that was it and I got it out of the way early in the game.

I don't think that was a flu. More like a stomach bug from food poisoning, if there's vomiting involved.
I ate at Black Angus for the first time, and I became deathly ill. I couldn't hold any liquids. I was so dehydrated that night by the time I drove myself to my university's hospital. They had to hydrate me via IV, and I was hospitalized for two days. I felt weak with no appetite for two weeks. It took me about a month to feel normal again.

I'll copy/paste my cousin's story that I posted in the main thread
Quote:
Her symptoms started like the flu, then she got pneumonia. Blood O2 in the mid 80s, cant take any more than the most shallow breaths without coughing, throwing up from coughing. Can barely make it up 3 stairs to get in her house. Shes only 30 and no real health issues previously. She has no idea who she got it from, she wasn't around any visibly sick people.
Quote:
First night in the hospital she got up to go to the bathroom, passed out (less than 86% O2) on the way and literally broke her jaw, came to on a stretcher surrounded by nurses. No idea why she was allowed to walk in that condition
The next day she felt the same if not worse, with the added pain from her jaw. Today she's starting to feel better, they had her up in a chair for a a little bit, tomorrow they're gonna try a walk. Hopefully it's all on the upswing from here.
Not sure what treatments they've had her on, she's been a little too preoccupied to chat. Her sister and sister's fiance both are diagnosed now as well, but didn't get hit as hard as her it seems. They still got completely leveled though. I'm glad it seems like she'll come out unscathed, idk how it would've played out if she never went to the hospital though, she was basically choking for air.
Quote:
just facetimed with her today for easter. She's been out for about 10 days (after 5 nights at Mass General, and a week of symptoms before that), still not breathing great and bad chest pain but I believe she was told she's clear of COVID and pneumonia at this point. They'll be bringing her in to check her lungs out further once things calm down a bit, hopefully any damage is something the body can repair itself
Hearing the story was pretty crazy though, getting dropped off and not knowing if you'll ever see your family again, you don't even see a human face once you're in there with everyone masked up, she communicated mostly through intercom with staff since they limited exposure time as much as possible. She was definitely super shook up from it all
Hearing the story from my other cousin who dropped her off was pretty rough. Space suit men coming up to the car to do the intake, watching her sister go into a hospital she wasn't allowed in and not knowing if she'd ever walk back out. Plus not knowing if she was going to get it after being exposed on the car ride (an ambulance would've taken her to their awful local hospital).
But her other sister did get it, and said it was pretty much a severe flu for her and her husband, but not enough to go to the hospital. They have a newborn that fortunately didn't develop any symptoms

It's possible nitric oxide helps the lungs during infection but this is still under case study at hospitals.

Not necessarily- when I get the flu it's mainly achy muscles, fatigue, lung infection and respiratory issues, plus occasionally nausea but I usually have shits not vomiting.
Vomiting can accompany the flu, however it is not one of the main symptoms, and a lot of people mistake stomach illnesses like gastroenteritis caused by bacterial or viral infections- a lot of viral stomach flus are actually not flu viruses they're noroviruses.

Vomiting is not a normal symptom of the flu. You probably didn’t have the flu. There are some very distinct symptoms of the flu and none of them are gastrointestinal. Very rapid onset is the hallmark of a flu.
You likely had a norovirus

I had it, it was mild, there are some concerning sensations though now that I am better, I can feel something in my lungs, but who knows maybe it was always there and I never noticed, I use to smoke every kind of drug there was, but this sensation in my lungs seems new and I don't feel it every breath just sometimes.

Being sick for a month is commonly reported. About half say it was mild and the other half say it’s the most sick they’ve ever been
Just the 10-20% chance you need to be hospitalized and up to half those who get hospitalized due is enough to convince me to avoid contact with people as much as possible.
This is a far worse illness than the Spanish flu
