Trying to will the wood chip patches to fruit! The mycelium has expanded greatly towards the top of the chips, the wind stripped off the top layer or some of both.

Been looking in mulch beds no luck yet.
Keep Looking in mulch beds, you have a much better chance than looking in natural habitat
I wouldnt put too much thought into the boundaries on that map, ovoids and boxelders grow all throughout PA despite only the lower half being shaded

Hey guys. Really excited for this season. I have found some new spots that seem very promising. I’ve been finding a lot of wood chips with very distinct blueing in and around mycelium. Anyone know if this is a sign?!?!?
Also here is a throwback from last year. Really wish I saved the spores :’(

Found these as soon as I stepped into the hunting grounds on April 10. I'm giving away spore prints in marketplace if anyone wants one they where some monsters.

Wow, beauties! I don't have access to the marketplace yet, but I am super interested. We've been getting rain here the last 2 days with 65 degree weather, so I'm excited to go hunt.

It really helps to have vegetation growing amongst the mulch. It’s pretty unusual to see ovoids fruiting straight out of pure mulch early in the season.

Was wondering if there were anyone hunting the ohio river valley between Maysville and cinci. This is my first year hunting ovoids and have been out a hand full of times without any luck. it seems i'm hunting in perfect habitats and always try to get out in warmer weather after rain. i'd much rather find them in natural habitat than park mulch, but when push comes to shove, it is what it is.. I know I said advice, which I can read and there's plenty of information on this site to put you in the right spots as far as habitat. and I know it's asking a lot, but maybe a general location or a hunting partner would be cool as shit.

Still only 2 patches producing mature clusters, gonna have a look in the floodplains again tomorrow, this rain should get things going again.
Good ass haul today considering its cold and windy as fuck
This patch only puts out tiny voids that have no spores but they are potent as hell so I aint mad.

And I was just thinking Pitt should be starting right about now. Found these in landscape mulch in a park in 2012

Is Only Game said: Koods they are in that area, but you are correct. The finds in Roc were in a park on mulch beds IIRC. My friend used to find them in parks on Genesee River in Rochester. They do grow naturally, but they are not well-spread here. Maybe it's the climate, but idk. I haven't found any natural environments, but have heard of them found growing naturally in the Ithaca
If there have been mulch finds in Rochester than that gives me hope for Central NY
I have been mostly searching Ovoid turf, flood plains etc.. I think it's time I switch strategies and start searching mulch. Lots of parks in my area with mulch that has been there for a while, I know where some piles are too
Much easier to spot fruits in mulch anyways

This ^^^ is a good point for noobs to remember. Check the edges of mulch beds and even into any vegetation that's close by...especially downhill, no matter how slight the decline, because mulch will wash into the nearby vegetation during heavy downpours.
You can sometimes find very nice flushes in nearby vegetation, woods, etc. instead of directly in the mulch bed itself.

There was no pinching off this cluster from the stem butts

This whole pile is colonized and has just started fruiting. Gonna be an outstanding flush several days from now

That is a little disheartening as this is where by far have the most mycelium grown. Hopefully I get some action from these mulch beds still. I went from Ovoid -> spore print -> pf cake -> apple+cheap mulch outdoors last summer.
Is it a humidity thing the grasses help with? Is there anything I can do to help at this point? I have some straw for grass seed starting I could put on top if that helps. A couple of them I did put straw over a couple months ago.

Looking at the fence is west. Its under a large box elder. Gets direct sun early morning, shaded by box elder afternoon, shaded by fence later afternoon /evening. The chicken fence is stop squirrel from digging. Over the summer/fall squirrel ripped up the patches a few times.
I do have some patches in local flood plains under box elder that has celedine and other stuff growing through it maybe I will have better luck with. These mulch beds get a little more sun so I figured it would go first. I did not know lack of vegetation would be an issue =(. I thought i had seen awesome mulch flushes in direct mulch with no vegetation around, but I am pretty new. Last year first time I found them about 100miles from my house. Fist year trying to transplant.

You'll get some action there, noname. I bet they fruit up against that fence if those chips are colonized.
And yeah, it's likely a moisture at the surface of the substrate thing. But that doesnt mean they wont fruit right out in the middle of that bed, though, when conditions are right.
I've had bad fruiting luck from messing with a bed when this close to fruiting...you could throw a LIGHT layer of straw on part of it to experiment if you want.

Vegitation makes a world of a difference, my favorite plant to use is wild strawberries because of how aggressively they provide cover and grow well in low nutrient substrates like mulch. And you get a tasty snack out of it too!
