Koods..a chicken pox pandemic? You realize it makes you itch then it goes away right?
You do realize that now it just makes you itch then goes away?
You are speaking from the standpoint of being the evolutionary result of having the chickenpox virus infect your ancestors - those ancestors who couldn't handle the virus have by now all died off, leaving those who can handle it to pass on their genes.
I completely agree with what koods said: at first, chickenpox probably was a pandemic. Likely it was a pandemic with a far higher death rate than is now seen with chickenpox. Something much closer to smallpox, I would hazard a guess.

Smiling the virus away may actually have something to it, to the extent that positive emotion enhances the immune system (I’m thinking likely). Of course, not protective, but a good mindset to have coupled with all the caution and caveats we’re now so accustomed to. Fear and anxiety I’m sure are corrosive and of no benefit.
We’re all so starved in this daily interaction; I think it’s good to take a moment to reflect on positive things, memories and people, giving ourselves that little hit of positive emotion, building some resilience.

Oh you know that was skimmed off the top. That was meant to go into some dude’s yacht fund right there... I’d like to hear what they say that was actually meant for/meant to go...

It doesn't really go away though. Later in life the infection can reactivate, and sometimes this results in ongoing nerve pain that can last years.

LogicaL Chaos said: Imagine if we had a system in place before this. It would have be MUCH different.
We did have a system in place that Obama made in 2015. The Global Health Security and Biodefense unit, which resides under the National Security Council (NSC). Trump disbanded the unit in 2018 to cut costs.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-fire-pandemic-team/
"Legum outlined a series of cost-cutting decisions made by the Trump administration in preceding years that had gutted the nation’s infectious disease defense infrastructure.
...
Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer abruptly departed from his post leading the global health security team on the National Security Council in May 2018 amid a reorganization of the council by then-National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Ziemer’s team was disbanded. Tom Bossert, whom the Washington Post reported “had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks,” had been fired one month prior.
It’s thus true that the Trump administration axed the executive branch team responsible for coordinating a response to a pandemic and did not replace it, eliminating Ziemer’s position and reassigning others"

There's a very simple reason why a lot of us are talking about Trump right now during this pandemic: he's the President of the United States and his actions and words alone have a huge impact on how this all unravels. We can't just ignore the connection between the two. Doing so would be foolish. Yes, some take this to more extremes than others, like with anything.

Also I'll add ANYONE who gets on public TV with a world wide connection (not to mention their job title/position) and states "No, I'm not wearing a mask, it's a suggestion, not a law, I will NOT WEAR ONE" is a blatant idiot and fuck up.

A very quick search reveals you have used, or quoted, the word 'Trump' here, every day (and often several times a day), since the second of this month.
I'd say that's taking it to extremes.
This is not solely an American issue, or a political issue, and it would be wonderful to hear about the other sides of it rather than making that 50% of what we're talking about.
I imagine all the constant rhetoric from the American POV is driving other posters and good input away.
Perhaps if those here that want to make this thing all about that held their tongues a little, we might all have a better experience.

No you're right. It's just so exhausting seeing his name constantly. It's neverending. Not just here but everywhere.
And yes he does have a sizable impact because of his title alone, obviously, but I was listening to NPR on the way to work and they had the Illinois Governor on and he said that a lot of what President Trump says are just suggestions & recommendations, and in the end it's at the state and city levels where they will ultimately make the final decisions on what is best for those immediate areas and the people within them.
I just think people waste too much time fixated on Trump because he's -- well, Trump.
But in reality we're all much more greatly impacted by our state and city governments.

Yes. Absolutely. This is a very diverse and international board. And a huge portion of this thread that's dedicated to a global pandemic is unfortunately about Donald Trump and US politics.
Others here from countries that are not the USA do not care at all about Trump and his press conferences and US freaking politics. Maybe those who want to fixate on Donald Trump and his response to anything covid related could make a thread solely dedicated to discussing that as opposed to making others here wade and sift their way through the muddied waters of post after post after post of Donald Trump/US politics stuff.
