Please advise, stalled monotub. First time grower.
    #26587893 - 04/09/20 02:49 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all! Let me begin by saying that this forum is amazing source of information for a novice cultivator like me. It helped me through all stages from the start to where I am currently, admittedly not too far also. Including, cloning, agar2agar, grain jars, bulk substrates, monotubs, PF tek, SGFC, and more. As you can tell I have I lot of things going on during this self isolation period.

As I've mentioned, it is my first time growing mushrooms (Mckennaii subspecies) with the following setup:
  • Popkorn grain spawn
  • Coco choir & verm bulk susbstate. Layered, ~ 2:1 ratio
  • 32ltr tub
  • Using Bod's Unmodified Monotub TEK.
  • As the above tek indicates, the tub was placed under fruiting conditions from the start. Loose lid, light provided, and fanning about 2 times a day.

The tub was colonising quite well for 9 days. But I was getting nervous about tiny water droplets (dew/condensation) on the top of the substrate/mycelium getting bigger. My worry was that it may contaminate or stall the tub due to excessive moisture. So on day 10 I took steps to reduce the moisture. I did vigorous fanning on a number of times during the day. Took the lid off completely for some period of time as well as left it half open for the rest of the time. At the end of the day droplets of water on the surface of substate/mycelium were not gone but noticeably smaller. I prematurely congratulated myself on tremendous success and returned the tub to normal conditions. However, since then, 48 hours later there was no noticeable progress in colonisation and my worry is that I messed it up completely. Even compared with picture taken a day before there seems to have been no progress. This would be 72h.

The smell and colour seems to be normal as far as I can tell.

Should I wait longer? Any other steps I could take to re-start the colonisation? Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Please see the images attached.

6th April. Day before the moisture reduction.

7th April. Moisture reduction day.

9th April. 2 days after.

It looks good and takes a couple weeks sometimes before pinning starts.

The little surface water droplets are a good thing.
Check out Misting & FAE 👇 just to get an idea of how it should look
Nice job btw!

Sounds to me like youre babysitting it way too much, if your lid was cracked there should really be no need to fan it at all.
Little droplets/fine beads of water are fine, thats actually what you want. Just not"pooling" water, if it starts to pool up just use the edge of a paper towel to wick it on up
Also for the spawning you dont need to lasagna layer, dump it in there and make sure its mixed up really good, especially the corners(can do it with bare hands if you really wanted too)
Lastly to me it looks to be pretty dry(likely due to excessive fanning mixed with an open lid) id soak it down with some misting again n just let it be
Just remember next time when you get your coir n stuff hydrated, pay attention to the color and relative weight of it. It can help you figure out if it needs a little more water.
And less Tlc! Haha too much tender loving care can be bad mmkaayyyxD

Heres a good link on surface moisture n fae

Thank you both for reassurances and links to resources. Reading through Misting and Fanning it seems that I should have not bothered too much with those small water droplets in the surface of my substrate. As @Cootermonkey correctly pointed out I might have been babysitting the monotub too much, but its my very fist one so you know how it is...

This is exactly what I did with my second tub which is a week behind. I hope by mixing it up rather than layering it might colonise more even. One of the factor why I got a bit paranoid is that the first munotub colonisation seems very patchy. Although I don't know what it looks like below the casing layer, I was expecting surface area it to be fully colonised.

I'm not sure about that. The surface of the substate still has plenty water droplets even if a bit smaller, maybe not seen in the pictures clearly.  Furthermore all instruments (analog and digital) read close to 100% RH within the tub. So with my limited experience question is, is it possible for the above 2 conditions to hold true while at the same substrate being dry? Just to be on the save side I misted a couple of times yesterday as advised.

Finally, to my huge surprise and satisfaction today I noticed a few little pins in the tub (image attached)! This would indicate that there might be some light at the end of this tunnel. So my plans for the tub is now to mist and fan more often to encourage evaporation and reduce co2. Would this sound about right?

April 10. First pins. Yayyy!

Congrats on your first pins! I'm about where you were. Waiting. So I feel your excitement on seeing your first pins.

This topic has been helpful for me as well btw! Now let us keep playing the waiting game, cheers!

For anyone in the similar situation I would reiterate what has been already said a thousand times. Patience is paramount in this business.

This is how the tub looked like 4 days later when being harvested.

nice dude, glad to see examples of teks working. I feel like everything I'm reading is 10 years old (not a bad thing) and its nice to see current examples of viable tek

lol yeah mushrooms are a whole lot of waiting then a couple days of nonstop action at the end.

Aga I wouldn’t bother reading anything over around 4-5 years old. Things change very rapidly, even in the six months I’ve been active here.

For whatever reason the suggested threads only bring up 15-20 year old shit most of the time.
