Habitat: Found 10-12 fully grown out of dirt near some trees with good foliage cover
Gills: Orange coloured gills

Cap: Bright orange cap, Dark black colour around where the cap meets the gills
Spore print color: Orange
Bruising: No bruising colour visable
Other information: No identifiable smell, smells just earthy and similr to edible brown market mushrooms

i think g. luteofolius would be closer than spectabalis based on appearance. still not sure those aren't some kinda pholiota would like to see the print

The enlarged base in the larger specimen, as well as a lack of purple tones and completely orange colour all point to the spectabilis-imperialis clade

G.luteofolius can have enlarged base, red instead of purplish and a orange stipe. But you're probably right. Which species would you guess at?

Think gymnopilus flavidellus might be a good match. It's in neither of the clades, though.

G. flavidellus and its respective clade typically don'tt have a pronounced annulus. I couldn't personally guess the species because I believe gymns in australia are poorly studied, supposedly the same G. spectabilis that grows in the rest of the world isn't in australia, it's something else-- I don't know if this is true, it's just what I've heard around the shroomery. So I prefer to simplify things by identifying gymns down to clade instead of species, since a microscope would probably be necessary to make concrete identifications.
I believe Alan is also skeptical about which gymns grow where in the world-- for example, G. luteofolius from the east coast supposedly popped up on the west coast, specifically California. However, this was later determined to be G. thiersii, a very close relative. For all I know California could have both species.

Agree with all that. But I've never seen a red gym in the spectabilis-imperialis clade. What species within that clade would you say it resembles?

These gymns don't look red to me, they look brown-orange, unless my eyes are failing me

I'd call that orange-red 😁 But never seen a species with that bright colours in that clade. I don't know as much about gymnopilus as I feel I should know. So I would like to get a little closer than just the clade. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

lots of good pics of them in various stages of growth where you find them would help to get to species

I imagine the eventual Gymnopilus monograph will end up being as comprehensive and frustrating as Earle’s Galerina monograph. Similarities are broad and differences subtle. Sometimes two different things will only have one microscopic feature to differentiate.
Here’s some leisure reading until that monograph comes out... https://www.inhs.illinois.edu/files/8913/2111/9134/Gymnopilus_Guzman_Davalos_et_al_Mycologia2003.pdf
