Wondering about Russulas
    #26599000 - 04/13/20 08:32 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I've been reading past posts about Russulas and their edibility/safe consumption.  I'm thinking that I found two Russulas yesterday, both under coast live oak in the lower-elevation Santa Cruz Mnts of California.

Pics 1-3 show my first find.  Gills show distinct forking near the stipe.  Odor and taste are mild.  Spore print: DULL YELLOW.

Pic 4 shows second find.  What a beast. Gills are cross-veined. Taste is super peppery! No intention of tasting further.

Your fourth pic is probably Russula cremoricolor. No idea on the first one. Russula is not an easy genus to ID to species

I am certainly finding that out.  Thanks for the input!

I believe you’ve got Russula occidentalis and Russula emetica.

^ Hmmmm. Emetica seems likely, but could you find R. occidentalis in coast live oak habitat?  Also, the mushroom refuses to stain whatsoever.  Yet another mushroom enigma for me! Thanks for checking it out.
