Aquarium heater
    #2659898 - 05/10/04 05:02 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Is it a necessity that these things be submerged in water? Could I not just strap it to the side of the terranium (it's plastic). Or would I have to worry about melting? Thanks. :mushroom2:

yes, it might melt but also wont give a good distribution of heat... go with a fully submersible 50 watt heater... only 20 bucks

and just put it in a glass or cup or something? That wouldnt only heat up the water in the glass but would heat up the terranium also? I don't see how this would work, I would think as soon as the water was at say 80 degrees the heater would turn off, leaving the air unheated.

If it says submergable than it must be submerged. I bought a 75watt one from my local pet shop for $16.

In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.

exactly... they are inexpensive might as well go get one dont deviate from something that works just for the hell of it. Especially if the other way (non submersed heater) probably wont work

yes but submerging it in a glass will heat the whole terranium no?

Water is excellent conductor of heat. Worry not, the entire setup will be warmed.

You dont just put it in a glass jar in water in the incubator though. I'm not sure if thats what your saying your gonna do..

http://www.nansnook.com/~archives/tek/incubator.htm

Check out that link to see how it works. This will heat the incubator on the bottom and sides and will work well.

While using that is more efficient, I (and others on this board, I believe) have had success with just container of water within the chamber.

The heater in a container of water will definately do the job of raisng the temps in the incubator. You may want to consider putting it in a container that can be closed vs. open due to the amount of excess humidity created by heating water in an open container. In the incubation stage you dont need really high humidity and it will ,in fact, cause too much condensation which could pose an increased contamination risk to the jars if that water enters through the innoculation holes. A cheap rubbermaid food storage container does a nice job. Just make a notch in the edge of the lid so the cord can go through when you put the lid on it.

Good Luck
