Mucor-like contam in bulk, coexists with cubensis mycelium on agar and in rye?

Been having problems with a GT lineage for a while. It can coexist with cubensis mycelium and only shows distinct hyphal growth on bulk substrates.
I was getting irregular growth patterns on agar and in spawn jars (which for a while I attributed to a low number of transfers) but nothing very obvious to me at the time. I started consistently getting mucor-like mold patches in coir-vermiculite-gypsum (pressure cooked) bulk grows, with flat hair-like translucent columella and initially translucent then black sporangia. Sometimes the sub could be saved and fruited with quite acceptable yield but oftentimes not. (Heat treating the colonized sub in the region of 30ÂșC+ seems to help the cubensis mycelium get the upper hand.)
Only when I let some plates grow out fully did they develop clear signs (again, to me) of something being definitely not right. The plates developed sectors with only very thin mycelium and later there would a delicate layer of criss-crossing hyphae would develop across the culture. Apparently I had some foreign spores in my original spore print.
 Old cultures displaying weirdness
I'm currently testing late-flush prints recently made from bulk grows where the contam was eaten by cubensis mycelium. Seems to me like the problem persists.
New cultures. left: spores, right: transfer 1 (the lower left hole is a transfer excision)
Has someone got experience with this kind of contam? Is the irregular agar actually related to the bulk contam? What is it?

While I have no answers, I feel your pain. I have been working with a secret-mold contaminated gt print for about 6 months. The mold can be seen on agar as a shiny, clear halo around the edge of the culture, which I think I can see on the right of your second picture. It's also in any clones I've taken. I took a couple sporeprints when able and tossed the original. From this, I've learned to be very suspicious of my agar and not to bother with a moldy print. Good luck!

I've definitely been seeing this halo too and was wondering if that's normal or a sign of trouble.

Try isolating the halo, see what you get.
