Why are cultures so expensive vs spawn?
    #26595318 - 04/12/20 09:16 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Was doing a little shopping around for new edible cultures to grow.  You can get a 5lb bag of spawn for $20-25 or a culture for $75-250.  Am I missing something here?  I get that the culture should be extremely "young."  But still, the grain spawn can't be more than a generation or two away from that and can just put a grain on a petri.

Now youre getting it bud 👍😂

Pour that kernal of grain onto a dish and run that shit

Some places the culture is high because you're essentially buying the rights to it. They'll send you a new plate for the cost of shipping if you fuck yours up

Yeah, I bought a pack of LC's from an eBay guy a while back, but they were all shit (bacterial).  Been a little hesitant since then to buy from a home cultivator.  All my other edibles are from clones or a dowel from buying log making spawn.

The replacement of a culture is pretty nice I suppose.  But you could just order another bag of spawn :rofl2:

I think knowing that a culture is young is important, i have noticed my cultures start to act weird when they have been transferred many times away from the original.

It is possible the grain spawn to be far removed from the original considering how many times a large supplier may do grain to grain transfers.

But for most of us it is more cost effective to clone a spawn bag than buy a culture.

Another option is taking prints and growing them out. it's valuable to the community to do multi spore grows and find excellent strains that can be traded around.
