Species identification :)
    #26596779 - 04/12/20 09:45 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

WOLLONGONG AREA

New unknown species, unfortunately they've experienced some drying. Hopefully someone can shed some light on a potential species or genera?

Found on a pile of woodchips on a sunny day after a heavy thunderstorm two days ago, on the edge of a large paddock.

Sorry mate, they're found on the east coast of Australia, NSW South of sydney.
Here's a bit of a better photo:

This mushroom has dark purplish/black to grey stems.

I agree with Gymnopilus. Specimens are a little too far gone to have any confidence in a positive id. There are a number of Gymnopilus in NSW. Gymnopilus aeruginosus luteofolius clade is likely.

Would these be fresher specimens of the same genera potentially? http://imgur.com/a/zOer2Q6
They were found in the same woodchip pile.

I wasn't aware Gymnopilus dilepis was found in Australia? I thought it was native to North America.

Do you believe these are safe to consume based on the identification as G.purpuratus?

G. purpuratus and dilepis are ok, never tried it myself but most people say 150g dry weight for a trip.

Considering this would be my first trip, any recommendations for this particular species and for safety?

I prefer to use a hot water extraction by chopping them in tiny pieces and boiling them for 20min  then steeping another 15-20min, a double extraction will render the most active ingredients, by double extraction I mean boil them once, strain and keep the liquid, put more freshwater into the pot and repeat, the liquid is where the magic (Psilocybin) is at this point, throw away the fruit body after pressing the liquid out. if you have more  liquid than you would like to drink you can concentrate it by returning it to the pot and reducing the liquid down 2/3 by simmering with out a lid, stirring occasionally. The amount of heat produced by this method will not degrade the psychoactive indoles. I would use enough to water to cover the mushrooms and use a tight fitting lid to prevent evaporation during this process. The more surface area of the mushrooms exposed the better the extraction so finely chopped is good.  I have even dried and powdered my Psilocybe cubensis for extraction and using a fine meshed tea strainer to filter,  if using coffee filters to strain be sure to rinse the filter to get the goodies left behind.

Thanks for the advice  I'm gonna try my first dose tonight and I think my movie of choice will be hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, or maybe some Monty python!

Well I tried my first dose last night, about 1.5g or 1 big mushroom. I didn't experience too much besides nervousness and feeling a little hot, which I suspect was simply my room. I experienced little to no gastrointestinal discomfort for the period.

Did I dose enough? Or were the mushrooms inactive? Any ideas?

Gymnopilus are weak 150dry grams is what most people report dosing at.

Oh my god! I thought you had a typo when you said 150g before! Wow okay, well I'll definitely reassess my condition and try again on a higher dose sometime.

Recently went back to this spot and found another batch of much fresher yellow/orange mushrooms that I'm sure must be the species of probably gymnopilus that I found originally, however before i could get home to charge my phone they have gotten significantly darker from the moisture in the ziplock bag and aren't worth photographing :frown: so I'm wondering if anyone can help me, they were yellow/orang and very much shaped how the original species were, found on the exact same pile of woodchips and stained deep purple/blue when picked. Are these likely those same gyms?

I'm not going to try and id based on your description, but I can tell you plastic is the worst choice for storing mushrooms; I have made this mistake in the past. Sometimes that's all you've got though! Paper bags are much better.

Yeah I definitely learnt that the hard way, still will try to make the most of them likely enough but god they don't look nearly as appetizing as they did before ..
