I just do fan first then salts in a tote with a mini battery powered fan to speed things up. They get cracker dry, definitely more of a pain though. Maybe I'll try again sometime.

The melting point of psilocin is like 330F and psilocybin is 430F. Most dehydrators top out right at the higher temp points for pasteurization (160F...ish)

Just gonna leave this here....:raver2:

Whats wrong with air drying? It takes 4-7 days but I have never had a loss of potency. Just keep them away from hot sunlight. Salt under a paper towel and
rice around the fruits helps desiccant a bit. Small fan.

Because potency can vary from one flush to another or even in the same flush, there is no way to say for sure that they weren't already weak before going in the oven.

I've always waited until all flushes are done, ground up the whole batch in a coffee grinder, stir it well in a big bowl, put em in caps, and there has been absolutely no noticeable potency difference ever

Of course there is a way to test it. You eat some fresh, then you eat some dry, all from the same flush.

Again, they weren't weak shrooms... They were dead when they came out of the dehydrator.

It wasn't the dehydrator

Psilocin pretty much oxidizes off from what I’ve read, so I’d bet your mushrooms had high Psilocin and low psilocybin contents.

Eating them fresh you would trip off the Psilocin but it would be mostly gone after drying leaving only the low amounts of psilocybin.

I might be totally wrong but that’s how I’ve understood it works and would explain the situation perfectly.

It's common knowledge that potency differs even within the same flush. It's not an insult to your shrooms

The whole ounce was dead. Next time I harvest I'll experiment. I'll cut each shroom in half by weight so I truly eat half fresh and half dry.

Now that's an experiment that you can take conclusions from. That establishes a control group.

Test it with an eighth first. I can't explain why it works for some and not others. But it's a fact my dehydrator killed good mushrooms in 6 hours.

You've got nothing to lose by testing it first

I doubt that. I mean coincidences happen and sometimes they may lead you to the conclusion. Or there may be something else you're not considering  I've actually singed mushrooms a little in the oven when I used an overly hot oven without enough ventilation and they were still surprisingly potent.

Possibly his shrooms had lots of psilocin but very little psilocybin. That would mean drying them with desiccant or anything else would also not work, the only way to preserve them would be making tea, or perhaps freeze drying.
