Theoretically possible to pc contaminated grain?
    #26595664 - 04/12/20 12:20 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Has anyone ever tried pressure cooking spawn that had been contaminated and then tried to re-inoculate it? I may try this as an experiment.

I had bought some pre-sterilized BRF jars and some spore syringes. Inoculated the jars and 6 weeks later not a single sign of mycelium growth.  So I inoculated them again with more spores from a different source.  Waited and waited and still nothing. So then I decided to experiment with them, so I now had finally acquired my own pressure cooker, so I PC'd them rather than starting over, and inoculated them a THIRD time, and this time they just took off and fully colonized in no time.  So I am suspecting there was contaminants in there (Even though I couldn't see them) that was giving the mycelium too much competition. Once I sterilized them again, all was well.  I'm guessing if the contamination was really bad, pressure cooking it would kill the bad growth, but the substance of the growth would still be present and might cause issues.  But yeah.  I think pressure cooking contaminated jars seems to be doable.  I'm sure it's best to just start over with new, clean stuff, but sometimes it feels like such a waste.  And if PC'ing them  makes them viable again even if not the best, then hey!  Why not?

Nice, thanks for the response. Maybe I'll give it a go.

I once sterilized barley from a failed tempeh experiment and then inoculate with oysters which flourished.

I would use discretion personally and just toss anything green, black or slimy.

For the best spawn, the sterilisation cycle should be a short as possible to limit caramelizing and maillard reactions, for hobby use I guess it should matter all that much, as long as the grains hold most of their form.
If it was bacterial spawn, it will kill the bacteria, but there might be heat stable toxins left after re-sterilisation. These won't be able to transfer to any mushrooms grown from it as far as I know, but it good to think about in case you want to use it for something else, like the tempeh experiment in reverse.
Certain mold can also produce toxins that can be toxic for mycelium, but I'm not sure if these are heat stable. There are some toxins that are heat stable, and severely toxic to humans though, but like above, these shouldn't be able to get into any mushrooms grown from it. And cross contamination shouldn't be a bigger problem then fruits from a contaminated block.

So might work, might give worse spawn. Not sure if it's worth it looking at the price of some grain.
