mix straw with colonised grain for bigger fruits?

greetings i was using colonised rye/birdseed for my casings so far. i just let it colonise and case it, fruit it bla .. but i have recently been told by a mate, that i could pasteurize straw and mix it with my colonised grain before doing the casing, it should give me bigger fruits he suggested. so i wonder if that will work? doesnt really sound logical to me. if it is for real, in what ratio to mix the grain with the straw? peace ohm *edit* i am not asking for some kind of spawning grain to straw bulk tek!

Its a very common way to grow large shrooms, pasturised straw makes a great substrate and is used by many here, do a search.
You get huge shrooms on the first flush, but not much of a second flush.
Dung prob gives you more weight for substrate, but from straw you get some bigguns.

P.s forgot to awnser your Q
ratio i use for straw or dung is 500ml of spawn to a gallon of straw. You can use more if you like, for faster results, but 500ml does me fine

Oh yeah, straw is some wonderful, wonderful stuff. You will get much larger fruits. I'm looking at a *picture* of some 8-9 inch fruits that are just starting to open their caps. As for ratios, the more grain you use, the faster the straw will colonize. Just make sure you read up on pasteurization(it's easy) and definately compress your straw after you spawn it for much faster colonization and a tighter brick of mycelium. Check out the faq: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3282
Best of luck!

hey guys,
thank u for input but i guess i did somehow ask my question wrong.
i did not intend to use the grain to spawn straw and work from it further on.
i planned to simply mix like 2parts colonised grain to 1 part pasteurized straw and make my casing, get the idea?
i am not asking for a spawn procedure on straw alone.

If your going to go through the trouble of pasteurizing straw, you might as well use *at least* twice as much straw as grain. And that's way overkill. Adding just a tiny bit would be a waste of your time, just case the grain directly.

hmm makes sence, so i could practically take one liter of colonised grain, mit it with 3 liters of pasteurized straw, then make like 4 casings with the resulted straw/grain mix, incubate and fruit them?
or wouldnt that work out?

Personally, I would take more like six liters of straw and mix it in say a 10 gallon tupperware container, mix it with the one liter colonized seed, and make one big casing. Incubation is not necessary with straw(it creates enough heat itself) and a casing layer is recomended.

i guess ill go for a bulk type of grow now, since this mixing idea dont seem to be too good :/
just regarding the bulk thingie, i just got 50 more days till i need to move, is it even worth starting a bulk project if i am so much limited in time?

If you spawn to straw, you have to let it colonise the straw for a further week. Else you will get nothing for weeks if you just fruit it.
Your choice is to cast and fruit grain, or spaw to straw, recolonise for a week at least and fruit.
There is no middle ground here imho.

not truw abou the secont flush, if you dunk straw you can get amazing 2nd flushes. Theres a completed grow on straw that was dunked and the 2nd flush was stunning.
dont forget that with dund its more like straw with dung since oyu only mix in abotu 25% dung. The dung is more like a filler to fill between the straw and make the casing more rich. The company growers dont even use dung, they compost straw.

I prefer a high spawn ratio...not only does it colonize faster but it gives the substratre more nutrients which will put out the better 2nd and 3rd flushes
