I use to use wheat and really liked it, but oats are so cheap...so I've been using that.

Yep. They are still colonizing. Had to spray a few spots of mold. They definitely need a coir top layer which defeats the purpose.

Red Millet.

Milo and oats are good too.

Looks like oats is taking the lead.

I started with rye, and never found anything I liked better. I just bought a 55# bag for US$22, even though same size oats was $14. Got excess now...lol.

Started with rye, tried oats because of the price, now I'm on to organic HRS wheat.  I get 50 pound bags locally for $13.  Cleanest grain I've used so far.

I've got a few others I want to try but I haven't gotten there yet.  I've got 15 pounds of hulless oats and another of safflower seeds.

As an aside ive actually seen the fastest grain colonization on a mix.  Oats, wheat and coffee grounds.  Shit rips through jars of it, easily 3-5 days quicker than non-mixed jars.

Thanks

Rye and rye berries are usually referred to as the same thing.

Rye grass seed is a seed that produces rye grass. It's a winter grass because it can Handle colder climates.

Rye/rye berries are a grass in the genus secale and is what we use in this hobby.

Ryegrass seed is unrelated to rye and is a grass in the genus lolium. It's just
called ryegrass but has nothing to do with rye.

If you want rye used for grain spawn, buy rye berries not ryegrass seed

Rye grass seed works, but is a pain in the ass. Not worth your dollars.

I'm surprised that popcorn didn't get more votes in the poll. Been using it for quite a while. Super easy to dry off and the large grains make it easy to work with. Much less mess than the WBS I used to use. 65 bucks CAD for 50 pounds which is a bit expensive IMO. Agar colonises a mother jar in 3 weeks, 2-3 more after a G2G at 10:1. Getting faster after every transfer!

WBS has treated me well this entire time but I’ve seen a lot of post in the past that make me want to switch to oats.

I use rye, oats and wbs. I like them all. Wbs and rye super easy. Oats are too but drying them take a little more patience

I get 50# of wheat or barley for about 10 bucks from the feed store and the prep is ridiculously easy especially once you know what you're going for.

I've been thinking of trying the no prep with millet since the source I get it from is very clean.

I'm hoping I can just fill bags with dry grain, add water, seal, and sterilize... but the prep is so easy with barley or millet already I don't see much gain but a little time.

But back to the op topic: I think barley has won me over. getting super fast colonization and was the easiest and fastest prep I've ever done. Lefty' EASIER Than Fuck Barley Prep
