Looking to get started cultivating
    #26593841 - 04/11/20 04:48 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hi all just found this forum and have become fascinated with mushrooms over the last few weeks. What would be the start up cost involved for a small grow say like my basement or garage? I've been looking at equipment on Alibaba and its not cheap.

Also what size bags are the most practical like yield per lb of compost mix there are so many sizes.

and can someone please give an example of your rotation schedule, like how long do you flush once or twice? and when to replace the bags?

thanks everyone

I would guess about $400 to $500 to get everything you need to grow properly.

The 1st thing you will need is a 23 quart presto pressure cooker ebay has them cheaper than I have been able to find them anywhere else at $85.20...

https://www.ebay.com/i/392347705980?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=392347705980&targetid=885020184850&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9008761&poi=&campaignid=9423618435&mkgroupid=96387797275&rlsatarget=pla-885020184850&abcId=1141016&merchantid=6296724&gclid=CjwKCAjw1cX0BRBmEiwAy9tKHtOAIB1lLmu-OxH_9taLSWkNCSnFRVWJ1bZfK5x2DB8qaenLcDDPMRoC9oQQAvD_BwE

Then you need bags. I would suggest the 14a to make 6 lb bags...

https://myersmushrooms.com/shop?olsPage=products

Then you need whole oats about $20 for a 40 lb bag. (feed store)

You need fuel pellets (about $6 40 lb bag)

You will need bran or preferably soy hull. (source locally)

You will need a mini-greenhouse...

https://www.amazon.com/Gardman-R687-4-Tier-Mini-Greenhouse/dp/B000NCTGQE/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1N6YALWJE3K8Z&dchild=1&keywords=mini+greenhouse&qid=1586654943&sprefix=mini+gree%2Caps%2C167&sr=8-1

3 disk pond fogger...

https://www.amazon.com/House-Hydro-Commercial-Transformer-Replacement/dp/B00FGVCS3A/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=3+disc+pond+fogger&qid=1586655045&sr=8-3

exhaust fan...

https://www.amazon.com/TOPHORT-Inline-Variable-Controller-Ventilation/dp/B07VQZD8YJ/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=200+cfm+fan&qid=1586655174&sr=8-7

Then you need some miscellaneous items...

torch lighter
surgical scalpel handle
scalpel blades. I use #11
2 totes to make a still air box. You need 2 so it will be tall enough to put your bags in and work.

I am sure I left out some things. But hopefully, someone else will fill in the gaps I left. But that should get you going to start with.

Actually I was looking at buying 25-35k of equipment.

Take a look at this bag filler. HOW do you inoculate the bag after the machine seals the bag?

https://ainuok.m.en.alibaba.com/productlist.html?wx_navbar_transparent=true&type=search&SearchText=Rectangular+bag+filling+machine&pageType=productList&language=en&currency=USD&spm=a2706.wapshop.0.0&_aplus_page_enable=true&channel=minisite_a2706.wapshop.43009.i1

than I see people on YouTube filling there bags with water and the compost mix at the same time.

But with the filling equipment I guess you have to wet the compost mix before filling the bags.

Maybe then inoculated with chopsticks ... like toothpicks that are sucked through the plastic. I saw this practice a long time ago. .. a German breeder.

I want to grow all types of mushrooms.
What's the best compost mix? Grains and hardwood pellets?. Should starches be added as well? I want to get a fork lift so I can buy the bulk 250 gallon bags of grain and wood chips.

Im not sure you need any of that kind of equipment to convert your garage or basement, unless your garage/basement is massive. I would at least start doing it all the traditional way and then see what I hated doing the most and then automate that part. If you want a bag filler and are willing to do some DIY that dude gr0wer made one:

If you haven't grown mushrooms before, it might be best to do a run or two small/hobby scale to get a feel for cultivation, substrate/strain preference, and some troubleshooting experience. I dont know if I would begin my experience with mushroom cultivation by buying a forklift.
But if you've got a bunch of experience and you know what your doing then go for it! There are a lot of neat ways to DIY things to avoid very expensive equipment if you are interested

:whathesaid:

You're about to fuck up bud. I can tell by your questions you have no idea where to even start. You can throw all the money in the world at this but without proper techniques and experience it WILL fail. Especially at large scale.

I started out small and played around at small scale for years. Thought I had everything figured out. Everytime I've ever scaled up my game I've had to learn new lessons. I do this full time now. Not at a huge scale but about a hundred pounds a week. I've kept my overhead very low. We do every step of of the process in house and it's just the wife and I so we make a good living.

I'm not trying to discourage you but I've never heard of anyone jumping into this large scale right off the bat. I can't even imagine how that would work. There's too many little details

If you want to spend your money wisely maybe you should pay to do a training class at a mushroom farm. There are several that do that. At the very least start small and work up. Build your knowledge, experience, and client base as you go.

Good luck to you. Unless you're in my area. In that case fuck off this is my territory

I just assumed you wanted to do a small grow. But if you really want to go bigger the 1st things to buy or preferably build Are a flow hood and a steamer. I have the electrical part of the steamer and a parts list in my signature. The flow hood can be built but probably better off with a 24 x 48" fan filter unit because they are plug and play and can be bought for fairly cheep.
