Jiffy mix prep * 1
    #26593787 - 04/11/20 04:08 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys so I recently got into PE cultivation and have been told that a casing layer is basically necessary to get decent fruits. I have decided to go with jiffy mix from Lowe’s.

With this how do you prep it? The stuff in the bag looks hydrated already, I thought it was more powder like? And do you need to pasteurize? I haven’t been able to find a thread that has all of this info it seems like they are all homemade 50/50 mixes.

Good choice. I just use right out of the bag, hydrate to capacity, and then pasteurize. Some don't even do that, but I do to ensure all my hard work doesn't go to waste because of cutting corners with a casing. Works out well and def has proven to help prevent blobs IME.

Most definitely!

Possibly - over 170F is sterilization. Proceed with caution and maybe try another batch and stay in the 140-170F range for the 60-90min. Try turning off your burner or putting it on low when the temp reaches a certain point. For me, that's 120F on an electric glass-top stove. Then, it easily reaches to 140F and usually goes up to 155F-160F and I leave the burner on low to lessen the heat loss from the core so it can endure the pasteurization without me having to babysit it. You'll have to figure out what works best for your setup.

Does this Jiffy mix have Lime in it?

Is lime absolutely nessecary for casing layer? I cant find this jiffy mix myself so i have to make it from peat moss / verm and lime.

Lime is only there to balance the PH of the substrate. Calcium carbonate is also a good buffer.

It isn't needed but can help to keep the swings down.

When you say "swings" you mean Ph swings? WHy is this bad ?
Balance the ph of substrate? ppl use peatmoss for sub?

From my understanding the adjustment of PH is to keep trich and other contams from dominating the casing layer.

If you dont adjust PH will it just contam out?

( im aware it needs proper pasturization as well )

Iv also read on here that Calcium carbonate takes longer to effective ph and thus its not the greatest for fast acting as compared to Calcium Hydroxide ( Hydrated lime )

It already has lime in it. You could test the PH yourself and adjust with small levels of lime if wanted/needed. Again, I don't do that. I just pasteurize straight from the bag and use and know a lot of other people do with success as well. I have a few tubs of PE going right now that just ate the casing altogether and have started pushing up some beautiful pins. I have never deviated from it since trying it with success. I think the jiffy mix is sufficient on it's own.

Right on man. Sounds good. I need to find some jiffy. Its been hard to locate around my area.

Sorry if I sound like a broken record , but, if i find jiffy and it dosnt have any lime, is it still safe to use?

Is the lime ph adjustment's main function to ward off contams due to a ph that contams dont like?
