These are the first I’ve found but I did notice the difference and found a few that looked like the ones in your picture

I'm heading down to MD and Delaware this year, they don't seem to grow as frequently as they do down there.

I stand corrected.
I still dont think some exhaust fumes are going to make you sick unless you are picking next to a superhighway and even then its doubtful. At the very least you can still get prints and stem butts from them

Agree...it's not like these are a sustenance food for me...and to clarify ...this "road" I speak of is a very lightly travelled state park road...I be aight !

I'll settle this whole should we eat them or not. Bring them to me and I'll test them. If they kill me between now and 30 years you made a good choice by not eating them. If they dont kill me, well, at least you know for sure. Either way, I'm not concerned enough to worry about it and ill gladly put myself on the line. Besides, the reishi, chaga, turkey tail, cordiceps, lions mane, and other mushrooms I use as supplements will help cleanse me anyway. A clever cleanse or two will clean it out.

So is there any verdict about ovoids growing in NY?

If so, where would be the suggested habitat?

The southern half of the state definitely has ovoids. NYC metro for sure.

I think there were finds in the Rochester area, but that may have been in mulch. I’m skeptical they thrive in a natural habitat that far north.

Koods they are in that area, but you are correct. The finds in Roc were in a park on mulch beds IIRC. My friend used to find them in parks on Genesee River in Rochester. They do grow naturally, but they are not well-spread here. Maybe it's the climate, but idk. I haven't found any natural environments, but have heard of them found growing naturally in the Ithaca area.

My goal is to find some so I can establish mulch beds in my area. Then from there maybe try to spread them in natural environments to see if they can thrive. I don't mind if I never find them naturally around here, but it would make my fucking day. I get enough enjoyment from zoning out and just searching for mushrooms of all types. With so many people being out of work and in the parks/nature it does kinda make me uncomfortable hunting how I like to hunt. I get enthralled and don't even notice people because that's not what I'm lookin for lol. So if people walk up on my hunching around and think I'm looking weird, then I just tell them I am looking for antler sheds, haha.

Definitely check mulch in southern NY. I don't know if ovoids grow in flood plain natural habitats much further north than south PA, haven't had any luck in NJ floodplains

Beautiful.

I had three finds last year but all were on partially buried wood under box elders so I'm trying to expand to another habitat.

When you find them in grass like that do you tend to have to root around in the grass, moving it aside, or can you see them just by looking down into the grass?

I think I remember a find in western NY in a floodplain along the Susquehanna last year.  But I would say for New York ovoids, that mulch is where to look. Good luck out there!

Nice looking early finds everyone!  :mushroom2:

Went out for a lil today at the early spot.  Was able to observe lots of small early fruits.  These things can be really tiny, for being mature, when the spring is just getting started.  Checked out another spot yesterday, but it looks like it'll be another 10 days before that area sees any kinda action.  The only thing I found was some pins on a transplant (early fruiting variety) that must of been in a warmer location than my other transplants, because my other ones didn't have anything yet.  Things should really pick up after next weekend.  :bigblunt:

Here's some finds from today

PsilocybeMyMind,

#9 picture concerns me.  2 of them look more like Agrocybes than Ovoids.  That's just my opinion looking at that shot.  Of course it's been a while since i've seen any Ovoids, finding just 1 last year.

Did you spore print or bruise tests any questionable one's?  Or are you a 100% sure of your collected specimens?

Just looking out for fellow shroomers here is why I asked.

There may be something to TS’ box elder obsession

On the west coast, they only seem to grow natively in the Bay Area 🤷‍♂️

And I’m pretty sure the one Connecticut find was in the northwest corner of the state.

On the other hand, there have been finds on Long Island.
