New Mushroom Grower * 1
    #26592441 - 04/10/20 11:55 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello,

I'm new to mushroom growing. I suddenly find myself with some time on my hands and thought I'd like to do some micro-dosing with magic mushrooms but don't want to buy them so I'm going to try to grow them myself. I ordered some spores and hopefully with the information here I can make some nice ones.

Anyway - just wanted to introduce myself and wish you all the best as we are going through this period of adjustment due to the Corona Virus.

Thanks,

Washedawayy

Welcome to the forum!! It's a good hobby to get into, has it's rewards.

So what tek guides are you going to follow with your spores?

Have you looked into making a still air box(SAB)?

Thank you very much Rumfor69! I was going to follow the guide that I found on this forum which suggests the PK Tek as the easiest for beginners to succeed at. I haven’t put much thought into the SAB - but I was probably just going to buy a plastic storage container. One concern I have is the location and temperature of my garage where I’ll be putting the SAB. Where I live it can get pretty hot during the day and cold during the night and I know the max temperature in the guide I read recommended no warmer than 70 degrees F. I may wind up keeping the SAB I the house since the temperature is a more constant 65-72. Well thank you for introducing me to the lingo (SAB) and bringing up some things to think about!

The SAB is for doing “sterile” work, inoculating jars, pouring agar plates and then all the action that takes place with them. This is all stuff done in the sab. Check it out when you have time, it’s a neat part of the hobby. Not exactly sterile but it’s a way to kinda cheat the system.

A FC or fruiting chamber is what you actually birth cakes in. A mono tub could be considered a FC of sorts too I guess.

Look into shoeboxes before you decide, personally I think they’re much easier than pf tek.

When I first started I did both and shoebox was much easier and gave me 8x the mushrooms.

A lot of people like brf cakes but it really takes a while to master them.

With tubs or shoeboxes you just mix them up put the lid on and wait for shrooms.

These are my first ones I ever did, took the same amount of time.

Thanks for correcting me Roger! Now you see how much I know. The SAB seems like a great idea!

Thanks A.K.A. Stranger. I like the advantage of shoeboxes in that they sound easier and you say they fruited more for you - so that's certainly a benefit. If they are easier and fruit more why is the PF Tek method suggested for beginners? Are shoe boxes less reliable or is there some other reason?

I’m not sure, it kinda seems like bulk growing is relatively new and so since pf tek has been around forever that’s what’s recommended.

I’ve only been around a few months and even in that time there’s been things changing as far as the best methods to use.

I would say shoeboxes should be the new beginners grow, even if it’s shredding brf cakes into coir, just because they’re much more forgiving of mistakes. Once you’ve learned what good conditions are then yeah cakes work fine but until then it’s a lot easier to make a fatal mistake with cakes than with shoeboxes.

The main thing people will say is cakes are better cuz you can use a syringe. That’s true but you can make cakes and do shoeboxes with them. I did tons of syringe to grain grows with no problems too.

Anyway imo it just comes down to shoeboxes having a much wider margin for error.

Plus the big yields are awesome.

That's really interesting and good to know. I guess I will try a shoebox then. Do you recommend a specific guide? I am still waiting on a spore syringe which should be here in a few days. The mushrooms you grew certainly are successful. Did you dry them by the way? Would be interested to hear if you recommend using a substrate or some other method to get them cracker dry.

For the pf tek you don't need a pressure cooker.  I think that is why it is recommended for beginners... and you can use a syringe directly into the jar quite easily.  Syringe to grain does work, but has higher chance of contamination, I think.  One of those instant pots is a pseudo pressure cooker (11 psi vs. 15+ psi) and is how I started.  I went right to tubs and didn't bother with pf because to me it seemed like so many steps and so time consuming.  I agree with aka.  Tubs are the way to go.

Thanks ODO! I have a pressure cooker and an instant pot. I just want a reliable harvest. There is a ton of information on here so I appreciate the advice as it can be overwhelming to navigate.

I hear you man, it’s definitely a lot of info to take in. I remember first starting and being so irritated with all the agar stuff in the threads cuz it didn’t apply to me whatsoever lol.

Yeah you gotta have a dehydrator. You could very easily get an ounce at once from a shoebox so you don’t want it sitting around going bad.

If you’ve got a pc I’d recommend bird seed to coir shoebox.

There’s a lot of teks but it’s very simple. Just soak the seed for 16-24 hours, fill up and pc the jars, then inject spores and wait.

When the jars done you just mix the seed with the coir and wait.

There’s a couple good threads on the front page of cult usually, if not do a search but pay attention to the date. I wouldn’t use anything that hasn’t been active in the last year.

Thank you AKA - that is great advice! We feed the birds regularly so I have gallons of bird seed. I'm sure I'll have some questions I'll do some research before posting again.  :thanx:

Thanks Logical! Yes - I grew up by the coast and love the ocean. I visited the Big Island once and it is big! I can only imagine growing up there must have been amazing and special. Although I love the water - I picked the name Washedawayyy more for the way it describes a powerful action of removal, rejuvenation, transition and renewal - something I am seeking now for various reasons. Appreciate the warm welcome and thanks for the tip on the cultivation forum. Mahalo!
