Hey guys, doing a grow of some AA+ and wanted to share. I tried a couple MS to grain and never worked out for me, so I decided to put in the effort and start from scratch learning agar. All the time and effort feels like it has all paid off! I wanted to share my current grow! After several transfers, this was the AA culture I isolated and used.

I'll be posting pictures tonight of what my shoebox looks like exactly one week since spawning. I have tiny microscopic beads on the surface, not everywhere, kind of scattered around. I thought is needs to be everywhere all over the surface so I gave it a few pumps of spray misting yesterday morning, but I'm weary and cautious of doing anymore because I don't want to make anything too wet or over saturated. Yet I see other pictures of tear drop and rain drop sized beads all over the surfaces, and mine are nowhere like that so that's why I have been contemplating this. The reason I'm thinking into all this is because I'm worried if I made my coir and verm bulk substrate too dry. Right now I would say it's about 80 to 90 percent colonized.

Lol I forgot you had used two quarts of spawn I was so baffled how it was colonized so fast.
I still vote it needs more mist.
That’s a good culture if you’ve still got it plated.
Seven days with that many knots is great.

this looks awesome! can't wait to see it start to pin...
as an aside, i've always loved the look of 1/4pt jars for agar work. i know it's not nearly as efficient as other agar teks, but glass is just so clean :p

So you think another mist is needed? How do you know if you’ve misted too much and made it too wet or over saturated it?

If water pools up pour it out. Water should just be glistening on the surface and then building up on the walls and lid. If you can tilt and pour out water do it.

I just gave it 2 squirts of fine mist and that's all. I looked over it with my flashlight and now I can definitely see glistening fine mist beads. Now I'm kind of worried if I may of over did it because could those end up pooling up? They're really fine, but now I'm concerned it can be over saturated and done because I gave it a mist yesterday too. I'm too afraid to even do anymore now while colonizing.

the fine mist is totally fine. it won’t start pooling if it’s just fine beads. it just shouldn’t look sopping wet or have puddles that move when you tilt the tub that’s too much water

so now, just make sure those beads are always on surface.
So you can give less fresh air which will make the same beads evaporate slowly, which works ok if your not home or able to keep close eye on it.
Or
You can up the fresh air exposure and as soon as the beads evaporate, mist it again. Doing this will need micromanagement and frequent watching since more fresh air exposure will evaporate faster (controlled moisture).
Just don't let it dry out

So yeah I'm doing an unmodified shoebox with just the lid cracked on the latches for FAE. I thought you don't mist until there are pins. Can't you over do misting while it is knotting and prevent it from pinning? Also, I have a little FAE at the moment like I told you about, but should I increase it now while knotting? Or only increase FAE when there are actual pins?

I haven't been moving it so I don't want to pick it up - set and forget -, but I can see still see from the sides that the bottom curve of the tub and liner all the way around still hasn't gotten to being colonized yet. It's getting closer though so I think a few more days. If it starts pinning during that time isn't that premature pinning and a bad sign?

So I should increase FAE when it actually starts pinning correct? Or do I need to increase FAE now to get the knotting to pin?

you can put it into “fruiting conditions” from the get-go. as long as the moisture content is right it’ll be fine. i think that if you increase the FAE & get more evaporation you’ll see pinning happen soon
if you really wanna get crazy, you can just leave the lid completely off & mist it when the beads dry up. it’s kinda fun & probably a good way to learn abt dialing in surface conditions. you’ll probably have to mist like every... 30 minutes to an hour if you do that, depending on how humid or dry your area is

Not sure if I should give it a couple pumps of mist again or not... I don't know if it is because my sub might be too dry that it hasn't pinned yet... I gave it a mist the other day, so I have little tiny beads, but I don't know if my sub is producing them naturally or not... Not sure what to do but I don't know how to tell if my sub is naturally too dry because those beads are from me...
Should I turn my temperatures up a little for a little heat or anything? I'm in the low 70's - 70 to 75 max, but most of the time it's at 72 or 74. Since I'm doing an unmodified shoebox I haven't been fanning. Do you guys also fan on a shoebox or let it self regulate? I increased my FAE a bit by putting the lid on top of the latches for a gap.

Dude a lot of the time it would just be finished colonizing, give it some time.
If it’s got the water beads and air that’s all you can do.
It’s been what 9 days?

don’t fan anything it’s pointless. lifting the latches should be fine to increase FAE now, just don’t let it get too dry. your temps are fine. unless it hasn’t pinned in like 2.5 weeks you’re probably fine. just be patient & post pics of the sub if you are unsure of anything

Yeah, and I picked it up today to look underneath, and the bottom is only about 75 percent colonized. It's still got a bit to go then. If a sub is too dry can it stall the colonization?
And what is actually bottom watering?

I’d just mist it, there should be plenty of water in there still.
It’s got the knots so if you keep it beaded up and evaporating it should go off real quick.

Some of the big boys!!! This is only about half of them, I had 12 total that were monstrous, but I had to stop taking pictures with every single one because of so many lol. Here you go, these are some of the AA+ monsters - the big boys!!! There were 6 more that were even as gigantic, but all were laid out separately in the previous pics on the plate and cutting board for reference for size.

2.75 ounces dry, so pretty close to 3 ounces for my first flush!!! I guess that's not pretty bad for a shoebox first flush...?

Are you using a dehydrator??
That’s a good yield for 2 quarts it just seems like a lot for one flush in a shoebox. That’s like 900g wet.
But they are big and if they’re solid stems I could see it.
Tried them yet??

Yeah I used a dehydrator. They're bone cracker dry crispy now. I had to run them for 48+ hours because still after 24 hours they were really bendy and still had water retention, they're thick and huge. I was running them since I harvested Wednesday night, and they're officially done to me now, and it's Saturday morning. Those monsters dried out by themselves make up about 2 ounces, I had to break them in half. Those monster caps by themselves are a couple grams a piece, just the caps, 2 grams! The stems dude definitely have some wait to them. Each half is about 2.5 to 3 grams minimum a piece, and that's just a half piece. In full they average about 5 to 6 grams, and some almost a quarter for some. You could have a heroic dose just eating one of those big monsters in its entirety!!! No, I haven't tried them yet. I don't know what I'm waiting for lol, waiting until it's a good time I guess... I want to try them so bad!!!
