Ive been waiting intently for mushroom season up here in the UP. There's still a foot or more of snow on the ground in some parts, with more snow in the forecast, so I was surprised to see these scattering the forest floor. They appear to be very fresh, not leftovers from last season.

Habitat:
Growing out of the duff/dirt a few miles south of Lake Superior

Gills:
No gills, completely smooth white underside

Stem:
Solid, up to half inch long, russula-like texture (not fibrous).

Cap:
.25"-3" diameter

No spore print

Bruising:
None

Other information:
Chewed up and spit out a small portion after ruling out poisonous lookalikes, including Otidea. It has a very tasty earthy mushroom flavor, and I'm hoping someone can point me to a specific species so that i can confidently harvest some for soup..

Im guessing its some kind of Aleuria... But which?

It does look like peziza. Honestly, it looks like pizza.

Most species are described as having immature specimens which are cup shaped, occasionally flattening with maturity.

However, almost all of the immature specimens I found were flat, cupping with age. They were also about 3-5mm thick.

Is this Gyromitra leucoxantha? Seasons considered, and colorwise, that was the closest match I could find

You might be right. Looks like it. I thought it looked like a cup mushroom on the picture.

Apparently, brown cup mushrooms are very difficult to ID without KOH/reactants and a microscope.

These look so tasty (and from the wonderful taste that I didn't eat), I find myself contemplating whether I would rather be bold or old...

I'll try to be less impatient and just wait for the morel and porcini seasons ...

Thanks for the imput, Psilosadhu!
