1 1/2 year old LC Syringes from spore works, still viable?
    #26587609 - 04/08/20 10:56 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So I bought a bunch of syringes from spore works about a year and a half ago, all different types of oyster mushrooms, but life got ahold of me and I left them in the fridge for a year and a half. Do you guys think they are still viable? I inoculated some WBS with about 4-5 ccs of the syringes just to see what it would do, but I don’t have high hopes. Maybe I’ll have to order some new syringes.

It's probably fine. I've had homemade lions mane mycelium water for well over 3 years that colonized and fruited fine. I've also taken clones from one of those fruit, ran it on agar, transfered to grains and it's now colonizing fruiting substrate. It's less than ideal but will still grow, but may be slowed and not as vigorous.

3 days is pretty typical recovery time, should show signs of growth soon hopefully.

I had a syringe of king oyster that had been sitting in a fridge for 7 years that worked great. Well... it colonized great. When it came to fruiting it would only grow this globular mess of mutants. Definitely not what it once was, but it did *something*. I wish you better luck!

Wait, you're not supposed to get a globular mess of mutants? I thought I was doing good. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Let's play spot the mycelium:

This one is a little wet, probably will cause problems for me

Where is it?

There's one in here too, see if you can find it.

And I think this one might be contaminated, what do you guys think?

If it's contaminated you will be able to smell something sour. So snif the filter. Either way, it's probably too early to tell. But yea it looks bad.

the last 3 pictures, the top of the jars doesn't look good, looks like the start of trichoderma to me, could just be starch though. If its mold it should normally turn color in a short period. The first picture looks promising near the bottom of the jar and the 2nd and 3rd picture looks promising near the top-middle of the jar.

I should have mentioned in my first post (like pitchercrab said about his 7 year old culture) that old culture could potentially cause mutants too. My old culture was showing this, but I wasn't sure if the cause was from age or poor fruiting chamber conditions, as some mutated and some grew just fine from the same culture.

Noticeable growth now but wondering if grains might be too dry

I think the grains look alright, just give it time and it will colonize!
