Are these signs of early contamination? * 1
    #26590294 - 04/10/20 06:45 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello fellow shroomers,

I am a first time grower and I am using a Rye grain Tek. I followed the instructions to soak for 10+ hours, then boil them for 10/15 mins and then PC them for 90 mins. I inoculated the grain jars with GT spores and I'm using a polyfill filter for the jars. I inoculated them on 4th April and its been 5 days since. I can see some growth, but I've read that mycellium is bright white. Though I see streaks of bright white, I also see some greenish hues. Could somebody more experienced take a look to judge if I should dispose them and start from scratch or I should give it more time.

Dispose, review your tek, try again.

Which tek did you follow? I think most folks let grains soak for 24 hours and using spores on grains is usually always a bad idea sometimes you can get lucky but not this time unfortunately

Yeah, thats mold contamination.  Either from your technique or dirty inoculant.

I followed this tek:

https://mycotopia.net/topic/42752-a-rye-tek-for-anyone-even-noobies/

Which parts of the process are most vulnerable to contamination?

Hey Shroomguard,

Those jars are toast. I had to throw some away a week ago for the same thing. If you haven't opened them yet to throw out, I recommend doing it outside. If you do it in your place you may skatter mold spores everywhere.

In the future you may want to chuck jars at the very first sign of green. The more green you see, the more spores are being dropped.

Also another thing that has been helping me out is I let everything sit for about a week after presure cooking. It gives me piece of mind that I can look at my agar dishes and jars to see that they have not contaminated before I inoculate them.

If the prep was fine, the contams came from your technique or the syringe. For your technique, practice, slow down, follow the steps of the teks, and you will get better. For the syringe, try a few agar plates. If the syringe is dirty you will know in a few days. You can also just buy more syringes, bit it's a dice roll without agar.

People get intimidated by agar, but it's just vegan jello and you just put it in smaller cups. So if you can make jello shots, you can make agar.

If ita not trich, what is it?

Looks like green trich mold to me.

Shroomgaard, never shoot spore solution into a grain jar. U need to use agar then drop a slice into your jar.

So, I've decided to start afresh. After opening the jars outside and disposing the contents, I washed the jards with soap and then placed all the jars and caps in a container with water on rolling boil and let it be for 60 minutes. I hope this step would be enough  to decontaminate the jars. Then after they air dried, I soaked rye grains for 24+ hrs this time, brought the grains to a rolling boil and boiled them for 10 mins. I let them strain in a colander and drip dry. I also cleaned my jars with sanitiser alcohol and tissues while wearing a latex glove. I filled the grain into the jars , placed the cap and then foil on top. I have a small pressure cooker, not an autoclave, something like this

https://www.buyindiankitchen.com/media/product/12e/hawkins-classic-pressure-cooker-8-l-1ed.jpeg

So i place one jar at a time inside, put the flame to max until the pressure builds up inside, allowing it once to lift up the weight once and then keep the flame at medium to let the pressure be maintained inside the PC but not enough to to let the steam escape from the valve again. I PC the jars for 90 minutes.  I plan to let them sit for a week or so with the foil on, just to be sure that things are pristine before inoculation.

Am I doing things correctly or did I do any rookie mistakes? All feedback is welcome.

Hey shroomgaard,
A few things just to clarify.

Is the weight on your PC rated for 15psi? The 90 minute PC cycle is recommended for 15psi specifically, and I could only think that maybe your jars are never getting sterilized if your weight is not 15psi rated. Confirm this.
As for the tek you shared:
The essential steps seem there, but it could be anything along the way. I posted 2 links below, people will be more familiar with these teks by Trusted Cultivators. I recommend taking a dive to see what you might pull out on your own.

No need to let the jars sit for a week. It's better to inoculate them as soon as they have hit room temperature. More time gives anything that's in there a chance to get a foothold before your mycelium. If you have some spare jars, I'd recommend inoculating some and leaving at least one of them uninoculated after PCing. That way you can monitor both. If contamination arises in both jars (inoculated and uninoculated), then the issue is not, or at least not only, with your inoculation technique and/or inoculant. If contamination is only present in the inoculated jars, then the issue is likely from your inoculation technique and/or inoculant.

Hey Mycoactive, I took your advice and inoculated all jars but one. I don't know if it's beginner's luck or I did everything correctly but looks like there is no contamination this time. The grains have been spawing since 10 days now to be exact. Despite what I read about GT, they seem to be a spawning a little slow, but quite honestly I don't mind. Also, wanted to know when and how many times should I shake the jars to mix them up.

Looks good, genetics and environment play big roles in the speed of growth.
Shake between 20-30% colonisation to spread the mycelium, making it colonise faster. No need to shake more than once... Too much will stress the mycelium and it will not perform as well as it could.
