Second flush confusion

I'll be ready for my second flush within the week so I want to prepare properly.

I've read conflicting reports about doing the second dunk and roll.

Most reports say to dry the cakes out for a few days before doing the second dunk, then dunk between 12 - 24 hours, then put it back in the SGFC.

The reports usually say to leave the verm layer on and just dunk it with the verm. This seems counter-intuitive - Surely I'll be allowing the verm to develop more contam?

You see in my mind, washing the verm off, dunking, then washing the cake and adding a fresh layer of verm seems to make the most sense.

I will, of course, defer to consensus judgement.

The whole idea is just to rehydrate the cake with as little damage and
disruption to it as possible. So scraping and rubbing off anything is
not good. Damaging its current surface only makes it weaker and easier
to contam. You can just dunk for 24hrs right after the second flush is
done, no verm re-roll, then back into the sgfc to sit.

Yeah I personally never did re roll them, just a dunk or sometimes bottom watering.

And those cakes are really hardy. Once it’s fully colonized I’ve never had a cake contaminate until it was many weeks old and had put out plenty of fruit and just had no energy left to fight anything. I’ve kept them going just to see and still most got tossed with no contam having taken hold.
