Best grain spawn?

Hey guys! I’ve been growing for a while now and have had some decent success and some horrible failures thus far. I have went from buying presterilized spawn bags online to making qt jars of oats for spawn. I am wondering what is the best grain spawn to use to get good fruits? I have mainly been doing MS grows which I realize aren’t that reliable. Would agar and a different grain help increase yields in my tubs? Can you buy Petris anywhere locally rather than online. I have attempted agar before in a SAB but never got it to work, actually badly contamed my house. Thanks guys!!!

I haven't even started my first grow yet, but I've been reading and learning about it all for a few months.
I'm successfully doing my own agar from MS and then going to noc my oat grain jars from that via LI method.
I highly recommend reading through all of this. Agar and everything is there and very easy to follow: Everything in One Place

I love rye berries. They're easy to work with, easy to get by the 50lb bag from a co-op. And a lot of growers consider them to be the best to use. But they're not cheap rolling in at around $50 a 50lb bag. Bigger yield though...that is mostly controlled by genetics. Isolating good clones on agar, testing out bunches of different dishes to find the best.
If you're serious about this work and wanna work big league you gotta get a nice flowhood or build one, make your own agar dishes so it's cheap to do tons of them. The flowhood makes everything perfect. Use synthetic filter disks on all your jars instead of polyfill. Annihilate all possible variables for contamination other than your own technique. Just my opinion

The best grain spawn is the cheapest grain spawn. For me homedepot WBS has allways been the winner. 5-7$ for 20 pounds.

Im just going to switch over to sfd for a run, to see how they work out. Iv been growing mold on almost all my sbs of late and I gotta go through the steps to eliminate that green fucking mold. Stuff is a killer. I personally like rye but oats are almost to cheap to not use for me at least.

Wheat is the best imo because they are basically the same thing as rye but for much cheaper at 12 bucks for 50 pounds at a feed store

All grains will work with proper prep. I don't think any are better than the other . Oats are the cheapest so thats what I go with. Don't blame the grains. They all work.

I like rye and wheat personally, others like millet or oats, people use wild bird seed mixes, some use whole brown rice or rye grass seed. Its really all preference. Use what you can get. I like rye and wheat cause the prep is identical and easy and because its just what I started with.
The type of grain isnt gonna increase your yield, and unless your cloning and strain isolating, starting from agar isnt gonna do it either. People like starting with agar to make sure they have a clean solution first, and cause its fun. Me personally, I like just going spore syringe right to grain. I save my agar for starting from prints and cloning and just doing dumb experiments just cause.

You can also clone straight to grain. Cloning will help with yields and they tend to colonize a bit faster than ms IME, anyway. Not trying to turn you away from doing agar, but it’s definitely another tool you can have in your skill set.

Corn. Not popcorn, feed corn. A big 60lb bag can be had at the local hardware store for $5-8. Rinse it really well, put it in PC, get it to 15psi then cook there for 30 minutes. Drain, rinse all the starch off, pat dry with a towel, then jar it up leaving about an inch between the grain and the lid. PC for 90-105 minutes. I've never had any issues with this method. Some people say oh split open corn will not colonize or will get too wet, nah, probably 10% of the corn in the feed corn is split open/mangled/little bits, and the mushies eat that shit up! I'm actually thinking about trying cracked corn which is kind of like feed corn put through a blender. Thinking it might work better since it'll be more compact, we'll see

How do you clone straight to grain? Wouldn’t the mush be in sterile and cause contam?

You take a small piece of tissue from the inner stem and drop that into a grain jar.. obviously it’s a bit more complicated than that small sentence.. you want to do it inside a still air box while practicing quick precise sterile technique.
I don’t expect you to do this or anyone for that matter (theres been a few brave souls over the years) but this is how I did it https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6590986/an/0/page/1.
It’s a fun read and maybe it’ll make you think a little outside of the box (pun mostly certainly intended)
But like I said, you can just as easily do it in a SAB and achieve similar results

I’ll give it a read rn!!! Should a SAB have the lid on it or just set it on a table? I tried SAB work before but didn’t have the lid as the floor just my kitchen table. Will that work or is that why everything contamed?

Could be. This is a good place to start https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23990888#23990888
But there’s a ton of info about SABs that is up to date.. just use the search function and limit your searches to the last year of two.
