Organic Waste Disposal
    #26588921 - 04/09/20 01:54 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello everybody

:regularshroom:  :1up:  :regularshroom:  :1up:

This is one of the most severe problems I’ve had in this pursuit so far. I have a high success rate with agar, inoculating jars, and getting great flushes. I’m starting new stuff all the time, which of course eventually turns into a steady stream of spent substrate.

I understand it would be pretty easy to dispose of a few jars worth of sub in your garden or yard waste bin.. I need a consistent and regular solution to tossing out large tubs weekly. I live in a municipality that is notorious for sorting garbage, recycle, and compost so that they can fine  individuals if they put stuff in the wrong bin. I’ve thought about it long and hard,  I just don’t believe it’s safe to throw pounds of substrate mixed with aborts into my yard waste every week. Especially in this region, it’s probably one of the strictest zones anywhere for waste management.

So I’d really like to know what solutions my wonderful associates here have come up with.

I just purchased a 55 gallon tumbling composter. That was my plan to solve this. I’m worried about the composter being a festering pit of mold and bacteria though. I assume it would be good practice to never go directly into the clean grow space after placing waste into the bin. Are these concerns reasonable or nonsensical? Is it safe to have a large compost bin on your property or are you increasing the chances of contams making their way inside?

I’d love to find out that composting is commonplace as a bulk solution in this hobby. If not then I’m looking forward to hearing what people are up to instead.

Please and Thank You
All input is appreciated

Composter is supposed to be a pit of bacteria isn’t it??

That’s fucking insane the city digs through garbage to fine people.

Compost is the best way, otherwise just keep the subs in a trash bag then when it’s full go throw it in a dumpster behind a business or just stomp the subs to pieces and dump them in a planter or on the side of the road.

Composter for the win........if you have a yard you can also just dry the tubs out and spread around the dry matter it will sink into your grass easily.

I wouldn’t worry about the cross contam aspects, unless you’re talking about sporulating mold in grain jars it’s not going to be a big issue.  I even dump those in my fire pit, rinse with the hose and go right back to what I’m doing usually but most people are more paranoid there.

It doesn’t take much to get compost Going and rapidly flowing, you can do it in a pile in the yard also.

From what I have read on the forums, most people recommend compost.  Seems like the best solution.

Yep I’m just concerned about the cross contam issue mostly. I’m concerned that spent substrate if left in a moist condition would essentially rot and succumb to bacteria and mold potentially sporulating all over the place every time I open the lid to introduce more waste.  I’ve definitely considered just dumping it somewhere but I know there’s got to be a more sustainable and discreet way. Unfortunately my back yard is not private enough to break stuff down out in the open. I’ll be loading it into compostable bags in the garage and then moving it into the composter out back. It would be nice to know if anybody has some first hand experience with maintaining a large compost pile and active clean space simultaneously. Any increase in contam rates? Counter measures to avoid cross contam or is it just no big deal?

Thanks!

This question is here again for the 4th time this week lol I have a
similar situation where curb placement, and dumpster drops is not an
option. But my solution to the problem keeps getting me shunned lmao

Thanks man I see that now, good stuff

:facepalm3::takingnotes::bigblunt:

I still wonder if it’s gonna cause contam issues eventually, I suppose I’ll find out
