Though I've hunted a ton in my area and only 1 man made mulch pile has them that I've found within a huge radius of where I live. The one patch I have is wood chips in a flood plain and that one produces big time. I also find a large number growing right out of the ground seemingly though I'm sure there is buried debris. I'll post pictures of all my finds from locations here in the susquehanna valley as I find them. They are the bell shaped ones. Give me 2 weeks and we can compare what I find in the valley here.

I dont recall finding any with that big a simple or bell shape though in the wild or in mulch around here. Here they are the lighter cream color nipple with the 2 or 3 shades on top.

That only happens with that phenotype. I’m not even convinced they are the same species.
That happens with the other phenotype as well. Relic can confirm that they grow like that in VA. It's just a matter of knowing where to look, that's all.
I’ve been doing this for 11 years and I’ve never seen it. If it happens it is extremely rare. There is no doubt these two strains behave very differently.
Have you ever seen the Susquehanna phenotype grow in man made mulch?
I mean ... I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest with you, but I've been doing it for 10 yrs now and have seen them in 4 different states. There's loads of pics in my gallery showing the variety you find growing from logs. And to answer your question about mulch, yes it's a very beautiful site when they get established in mulch. Geez do ovoids love them some mulch lol.
Here's an example of the variety you find

Yes ovoids but those are the phenotype we are talking about that seem to only grow in the Susquehanna watershed. Is that where you found them? They don’t flatten their tops with age and stay close to that shape through maturity.

It just a bad message for noobs that they will be able to find them growing on logs like that. I spent three years wasted doing that. Then one day I decided to look along the creek banks in the sand and everything changed.

I'm sure they can be found like that up n down the Potomac. It's really just a matter of knowing where to look. If your in the right spot tho, they'll def be along box elder logs.

Anyone have a genus at least for this tickweed?
Only tickweed i know is Coreopsis, more often called tickseed. Never heard of it harbouring tick larva or nymphs.
Not sure of the harbouring thing but I found this...

But more interesting than that is the Japanese Barberry which apparently is a great home for like carrying ticks!

Yes, it is. And I only took like 4 of them cuz I wasn't sure what I was looking at.
I was looking for Morels and these were the first thing I saw within 5 min of walking...2 hours later no morels but decided to snag a few of these mainly to ID them.
