How to get the seeds from the pulp of Trichocereus fruits. * 2
    #26587554 - 04/08/20 10:20 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

To ensure your seed is mature for harvest you should wait until the fruit splits on the plant before you begin.

Use a spoon to scoop out the pulp containing seed.

Add quite a lot of water first time and use a fork or whisk to stir up and very carefully mash the seeds from the pulp.
The seeds will drop to the bottom while the pulp will mostly be suspended in the water.
Once most of the seed is separated leave it to sit for a a minute for the seeds to settle.
Then decant most of the pulp away, being careful not to pour the seeds away.

You will probably have suspended solids and you'll need to repeat adding water, mixing and decanting until all of the pulp is gone.

There might be a few dead or immature seeds(the Brown ones). Keep cleaning up to rid these.

Clean enough.

Pour out onto paper towels to dry. Spread them out to allow them to dry quicker and then bag them up for storage when they appear dry.

This is exactly how I process most of my fleshy fruit&vegetable seeds.
Another step that can optionally be added is to leave the seeds in the water for two to three days.
After this time simply pour most of the water off seeds(It may have a slight smell-dont worry its fine!!) then  into a very fine sieve & gently rinse with clean water under a tap giving the seeds a last light rub/massage to remove any remaining flesh-I then spread them out on a ceramic plate and once dry store properly.
This added step of fermenting is meant to help in two ways:
-to get all flesh off seeds
-lessen bacteria that may hinder seed germination

Not essential but easy enough to do.

Nice write up Karode!!
