Making something out of a pandemic * 6
    #26586580 - 04/08/20 02:44 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So the negatives of this current COVID-19 pandemic are obvious, but what positives can we gain from it?

For myself, I have family close to me that are getting up there in age, along with some medically compromised family members.

Whether or not they live through this, who knows right now, it's definitely a constant weight on my mind. But I can definitely say this situation has shifted the way I look at life. Nothing's forever, we all know that, but when people are looking death and even just financial devastation in the face, it all takes on a whole new meaning. You can't just live in the usual ignorance of it that gets us through daily life.

I guess it's just helping me to be more present, enjoy people's company more. We're all just here for a little while.

Having time off is also helping me address my negative habits... when I have nothing but free time and access to a whole bunch of booze and drugs, it's really been helpful for looking at the underlying things that make me want to use and/or distract myself. I've slowly been shifting to healthier habits and hobbies to pass the time. I can't lie though, my first week off was a bender of epic proportions.

This situation is screwing me over in a whole bunch of ways financially, but I feel like it's also creating the perfect time to reassess and start making some long overdue changes in my life and mind state.

Anyone else digging out some positives from all of this?

My cat is happy to spend more time with me.

I'm happy to be able to help my parents more with yard work and spend more time with my dad. Last couple years have been hard and I know he's a bit lonely.

I'm working from home but if things slow down or I get laid off I was thinking I might enroll in some online classes. GIS certification courses would probably be my first bet.

I really want to get back into mapping.

And I'm looking at catching up on alot of writing I've neglected for years.

While having to work, unfortunately, I'm mostly just thinking of drinking and stuff during the day. I have an end of the world stash but I'm gonna hold onto it until it actually is the end of the world.
But damn if it isn't tempting while I'm sitting here making forms for DMVs and arguing with underwriters about how I can't include a supposed driver who is less than 1 year old.

EH.

iF YOU ARE BORED TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN SOMETHING, TO TRY SOMETHING, TO DO SOMETHING NEW THAT YOU ALWAYS HAD EXCUSES BEFORE.

There's ways around alot of the closures and social distancing for alot of things.

Catching up with a lot of friends around the world on videocalls. My job isn't going anywhere - I just got word my contract is extended to the end of the year - and thankfully I'm no stranger to working from home, so counting my blessings there for sure.

Trying to reestablish a good routine now that I can't leave for the gym everyday. The abundance of time I now have has definitely led to me squandering a lot of it on computer games.  Making sure to exercise daily; got dumbells and bands and a stationary bike on which to do so. Starting to learn Spanish as a more productive pastime.

It's odd though; even though most I know have always said they would like more time, it's strange to have it forced upon us like this. I think it's leading to internal resistance and neurosis in many. It's certainly a tricky situation to make the most of, but I feel it will get easier to do so with time.

I'm adjusting well, to the point that I think the hardest bit for me will be going back to some sense of normality in a world that will be so changed.

My internal optimist hopes dearly that this will do us all some good, and bring us closer together somehow.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

And if you're dying to get out and see the world... I find google maps 'street view' helps sometimes.

This is actually backpack view:

Many of the castles and famous viewpoints in the world have panaramics. Just search for one.

If you kinda just want to do what I did, go to google maps, click on the arrow under the google guy, and as you zoom or move around the map more options will come up. Click on the pics with the little circle on the right hand corner.

The world is an amazing place, and it's not going anywhere.

I can relate to a lot of that, feevers.

Even down to the epic bender part

My first week off of our rotation I tripped on back to back days

Each day I hear or read about quarantine and all this free time people have been given.

I eat salt.

Seriously, getting tilted.

Especially when I see people out and about with no face coverings.

Seems like I've been walking around with a permanent stink eye.

I feel divided, seperate from many of my fellow humans who have this opportunity to connect with each other more than they have ever in their life.

I cast shame on all those who have neglected their children or pets or spouse and now coming to realize how precious these things may be.

Just piss off.

Yep I'm a jaded fuck too.

:ohwell: None of this is something I don't expect. But ya know some people will be encouraged to do good for all of this.

You're free to quit your job and figure out a way to survive months without a paycheck if you'd like.

Sounds like you could use the break

This situation isn't ideal at all for most people, and will end up being devastating for many, but it's mostly out of our control and it's interesting to hear what people are doing to stay positive.

I have been making a new positive mindset out of this. Also hopes for when it's over.

Started baking all kinds of homemade pizza again. It's a lot of fun. I enjoy doing it and it takes my mind to a happy place, where all I think about is the pizza.

I miss my friends, they called me today. They wanted to know what's up ? I miss chilling out with them everyday and laughing at stuff together. They would also fill my mind with all kinds of encouragement and positivity.

Besides sharing photos they're more like,, come say it to my face kind of friends.
