Casing layers for PE - no thermometer

I've got an APE tub that is fully colonized and ready to put into fruiting conditions in a mini monotub. I've never made an actual "casing layer" when moving to fruiting, and was considering giving it a shot. I've also never grown APE. When I planted this tub, I put a small 1/4" layer of coir/verm on top, which has now fully colonized.
I've got a few things available to me: - A bag of pasteurized coir+verm sitting in the freezer, at field capacity, ready for whatever I decide to use it for (NOTE: this is following Bod's cooler tek, so pasteurization is only assumed here, I would not have been able to test the temp to know for sure) - An unopened bag of Jiffy Mix / seed starting mix - Oven-safe turkey bags that I haven't found a good use for yet - Electric tea kettle that gives options for water temps... 175*, 195*, 200*, 205*, 212*
What I don't have is an internal / meat thermometer. So I have no real way of knowing if the casing layer would be pasteurized or sterilized. I've got an infared thermometer, but this wouldn't help me determine internal temps of materials.
If you had to choose between casing the tub with straight-up unpasteurized Jiffy mix hydrated to field capacity with just water, casing with the coir / verm 50/50 mix, or not casing at all and just fruiting as-is, which would you choose? My initial thoughts were to just hydrate a quart or two of Jiffy mix and case with it, but I'm reading mixed results with that, with most people saying to pasteurize it if I want it to work and not lead to contams. My main issue is not having the thermometer yet, so no way of knowing if I've properly pasteurized vs sterilized the jiffy mix. Can I get a bit of guidance? I'm wondering if I should just skip the casing layer altogether.

You can case it with Jiffy straight out of the bag. Alot of people have had success this way. I have a bottle grow I just dumped a hand full of jiffy on top and it is fine.
It is important to wait till you start to see pinning and knots forming to case it, otherwise your just adding another top layer for the Mycelium to colonize and it will set back fruiting longer.

I used it right out of the bag but it fucked my flushes up because it was too dry.
I hydrate jiffy with warm water and get it to field capacity. Dont even have to pasteurize it

Me personally I would just leave it be. I have never cased APE other than the 1/4 pseudo casing at spawn.

I also use jiffy right from the bag. By that I mean mixed with a little verm and hydrated to field cap.
I’ve always cased at like 80% surface colonization then left it for a few days before going to fruiting. You might have to keep adding casing to patch it if it grows over it but I’ve only had that happen with one clone, and a lot of guys like to patch case and do it on purpose ending with 1.5 inches of case sometimes.
Never done ape but I’ve also heard it doesn’t need casing for some reason.
I would just do a layer of jiffy and see what happens then go from there.

Thank you all for your input! I'm going to just hydrate some jiffy mix right out of the bag with some verm to field capacity and use that as a casing once I start to see some pins forming.

I would do it sooner. If you wait for pins I don’t think it’ll help.
Usually people case at 70-100% colonization and then leave it another couple days before fruiting it.
I guess letting it consolidate helps too. I’ve never tried it without letting it consolidate so idk but I’ve always had good results.

I went ahead and added the casing to it. It wasn't quite pinning, but I have a lot of knots starting to form, so it seemed like a proper time. If some gets colonized, so be it, I'll add a little more on top of those spots. This is a MS run from a syringe anyway, so all I need is a couple of fruits to clone and go from there.
Looking forward to having a nice strong APE variety to grow! Thank you all for the input!
