In the uk we get winter wheat. I know some American growers use hard white winter wheat and hard red winter wheat. I think we get red here. I know the prep is the same as rye but is there any cons to wheat over rye ? In the uk wheat is a lot cheaper

A grain is a grain is a grain. It’s all prep work. Any grain will propergate mycelium. If wheat is the only option then use it to its fullest! The only cons when it comes to grains for me is inoculation points for g2g. I can run any grain and get it hydrated enough to flush great as long as it’s prepped correctly.

You can use wheat. Rye. Sorgum. Almost anything will work if prepared correctly.

Wheat is wheat. Were not making beer, as long as its got the nutrients and holds moisture, itll do. Wheat and Rye prep are identical. I mostly use rye, but Ive used wheat too and its the same experience, same results.
Wheat seems like it tends to be a little bigger grain to grain compared to rye.

How would you guys prepare wheat? Mine got pretty f*cking intense puke smell after 24 soak, but I PCed anyways for 1.5hs. I'll try next time reducing it to 12-16 and do it with boiling water. I think one of the reasons my spawn is getting bacteria on the myc and making it grow fuzzy-foamy-like could be because of that (maybe endospores in the grain?)

Typically you wanna rinse and drain it a few times to get rid of dirt, soak for however long (some do a couple hours, some do overnight, some full 24hrs), drain and rinse again, then boil it in clean water for 20 minutes and immediately drain it and shake it to make sure its dry on the outside before loading it into your jars.
Im betting if your getting lots of bacterial contams, your probably loading them too wet.

From what I read it's the same as rye grain. Did you rinse the grain until the water was clear before soaking?

Rye and wheat are both great great choices. Interchangable to me.
Prep is very simple ime: Bring water with grain to 200°F, boil until you can push your nail through the grain with ease. Drain Strain (check with TP test if you're new) Load.

Are you on Instagram? Mycotek uses nothing but wheat. Check him out. I think I'm gonna switch after my rye is gone

Rinse the wheat. Bring a big pot of water to boil. Dump grains and wait for 10minuets. Kill the heat and strain and let air dry for 20 minuets. Load when grain feels dry.
