You shouldn't have a sour smell. You might have to much water in your substrate.

mock, your ratio is wrong. You should use 2 parts verm to 1 part brf and 1 part water. If you used 8 cups of verm then you should have only used 2 cups of brf and 2 cups of water. Even a couple tablespoons short on the water.

Ok the ratio that I had used in the substrate was for 1 pint jar:
1 1/3 cup vermiculate
1/2 cup Brown rice flour
1/2 cup water
(per jar)
I just checked and they have a sour smell for sure. What can be compared to the amount of moisture the cakes should have? One thing that may have effected this could be that my friend and I, (being the dumbasses we are) mixed the substrate with our hands... bare hands. I don't know why, we must not have been thinking, but could that have had an effect on the contamination?

Not if it was sterilized properly... if you are serious about this hobby, locate a pressure cooker or canner from a thrift store.

The jars were placed in boiling water for an hour for sterilization. How much would a pressure cooker run for? You say I can get one at a thrift store?

Depends, I got mine at a garage sale for $10, it holds about 25 jars at a time and goes to 30 psi. your mileage may vary, but you should at least check out goodwills and yard sales first... you wont pay MORE than $10 at these sources... if you cant find one there, try Ebay, the online auction.. ACE hardware has nice pressure cookers..
