[TEK] 45 Minute Millet Grain Prep for Spawn Bags : No Rinsing, No Soaking and No Boiling. * 1
    #26584191 - 04/07/20 02:25 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

There are dozens of ways to do Grain so here is one i like to do where the peparation is quick and simple.

Grain TEK for White Millet bagged and ready for sterilization in under 45mins.

This is a grain preparation TEK for White Millet & Large 5qt Spawn Bags.

One 120min Pc cycle with 4 bags is the equivalent of 20 jars. You save time in many ways from preparation to inoculation. 4 bag innoculations vs doing 20 jars individually. I use 1 spawn bag per monotub usually.

From dry grain right from the bag to spawn bag in about 45 mins. No soaking rinsing or any boiling required.

45 mins is a reasonable amount of time but once you get this process down you can have grain prepped ,bags loaded and the post-sterilization process all done in under 45 minutes!!! [Plus sterilization time]

It only takes me about 25-30 mins so 45 is just being reasonable for anyone that is doing it for the first time. I have limited time alone so i like to get in and get out as fast as possible.

**For Quart Sized G2G Mason Jars Click Here for the simple 30 minute Millet Jar Tek.

Lets prepare some millet!

Supplies: [of course feel free to use whatever prep tools you have. This is just what i use.

The measurements below are dialed in for 1 Large sized autoclavable bag. I usually run 4 bags inside Presto 23qt Canner. You can probably do up to 6. Maybe increase sterilization by 30 mins. I dont know.  I just like doing 4.

Millet
5gal bucket
Small handled wash bucket
5/32 drill bit
Fine mesh strainer or paint strainer bag
Straining spoon with holes big enough for millet to fall through
4 Autoclave Spawn bags [.02 micron patch pre-sealable]
Impulse Sealer [you could probably use tubing and bag clips but i have not tried.]
Kitchen Scale
Large bowl
A plastic cup to scoop grains and pour water from
GYPSUM [optional]
Clothespins or chip clips
Clothes hangers
Gorilla Tape
Clear packaging tape
Sharpie
Large pillowcase

STEP 1. Bucket sifter and grain cleanup

Time to Complete: 5 mins or less

once you have your sifter bucket made the next time youll shave off 5min.

**[You can skip this step if you have 100% pure millet without any sunflower seeds etc Also some people like to keep the sunflower seeds so do what works for you.]

Drill tiny holes with your 5/32 bit  into the bottom of the small wash bucket. We are using this  bucket as a quick sifter to separate the millet from mostly everything else. You dont have to get every sunflower seed, stick or whatever. Were just removing the majority.

Place your newly made sifter bucket into your 5 gallon buck. Open your millet and fill the small bucket about 1/4 - 1/3 full. Try not to fill it more than that or youll have to use too much effort to shake it and itll be heavier.

Now oscillate or shake and the millet will begin to fall through and collect in the 5 gal  bucket. Fill your 5 gal buck up as much as you want but youll need almost a 1/4 full. This process shouldn't take more than a few mins.

https://imgur.com/a/lCMGWSf <easy.gif>

STEP 2. The Dry Rinse

Time to Complete: 8 mins [2 Minutes Per Bag]

Lay out your kitchen scale. Place a large bowl on top and press the TARE button. Now pour in 1125 grams of your pre-sifted  millet into the bowl. This is enough for 1 Bag.

[Ill update this picture next time to read 1125g]

Now dump the weighed out millet into your fine mesh strainer or paint strainer bag. Do Not Rinse it or get it wet!

Now take your slotted spoon and give the dry millet a brisk stir. You can let the seed sift through the spoon  and collect any sticks and sunflower seeds if they got through the bucket. Now give the strainer a little shake or just more stirring and notice the dust and debris that has fallen out from the bottom.

This is what i call a "Dry Rinse".

STEP 3. Load the Bag

Time to complete : 4-6mins [About 1-2 minutes per bag]

A. Open your bag and use your cup to transfer your dry millet from the Dry Rinse strainer into the spawn bag. Take your time. You dont want millet getting everywhere.

B. Drop 1tsp of Gyspum on the top of the grains inside the bag.

C. Place your plastic cup on the scale and press Tare. Now fill the cup with warm-hot water from the tap and place on the scale. You want 500-550g of water MAX. I use 550 for the Audobon Millet Brand which is roughly 12% less water than the amount used in the G2G Quart Jars. You can use 525g if you want slightly drier grains with Audobon.

Set the bag to the side and do the next 3 the same exact way.

Now were going to lightly stir each bag to distribute the dissolved gypsum.

Just take a spoon and stir each bag lightly for about 3-4seconds each. Just enough to dissolve the gypsum and mix it around a bit.

Well thats it! Your grain is now prepared and ready for sterilization but first we must seal the bags.

STEP 4. Impulse Sealing bags
[au]Time to Complete: 12 mins [3 minutes per bag]

Stand your bags straight with the patch facing towards you. Now line up the gusset seams and push all the air out so the bag looks tight against the top of the grains.

Pinch in one side and apply a clothesline pin to hold it. [Optional until you get the hang of it]

Now pinch in the other side and pin it.

Now fold the entire part of the empty bag towards you so its laying flat with the patch facing down. Then fold it in half front-to-back so that the filter is facing upwards resting on top of the grains.[ You might have to take your finger and poke the sides at the grain level to get the folds to line up.]

Now push any air out and slide towards your impulse sealer.

Lay the top of the bag across the sealer, press any air out by laying one hand on the bag. Seal at about 1/8-1/4 below the top of the bag then seal again about 1/8 below the first seal.

Gently place your hand on the bag and easily press out any air through the patch. Be patient. Just apply enough pressure to slowly release the air. Do not press too hard or youll blow the seam out.

Repeat for the next 3 bags.

STEP 5. Sterilization

These bags will sterilize in the PC For 120 minutes @ 15-17psi

Loading the PC with your spawn bags.

Time to complete: 5 mins

I use jar rings stacked 3 high around the bottom of the canner then place the trivet on top of the rings. You do not want the bags sitting in water!

I have hard water so i add a splash of white distilled vinegar to the PC so the bags dont come out looking hazy.

Add in 3 quarts if warm-hot water to the PC.

Now take your pillow case and run water over it in the sink. Get it drenched. Ring a bit out and bring it to the PC.

We soak the pillow case so that it doesnt absorb water from the steam inside the PC.

Place the pillow case inside the PC.

Grab one of your bags by the top of the bag above the patch and lift it. Youll notice it sucks in like a vacuum.

Now use two hands and press/squeeze the front and back of the bag to make it a bit more narrow. Place it inside the pillowcase/PC with the Patch facing outwards.

Now do the same thing for the next bag and place it beside the first one so that both patches are opposite each other and facing outwards.

Use jar rings in between the bags to create space between them. Now add the last 2 bags but rotate them 90°. [ each patch will be facing North South East West] make sure all bags have rings in between them as spacers.

Now fold the loose bag tops over one another and press them down flat.

Now grab the pillow case and squeeze it together to pull enough fabric together in your hands to tie the pillowcase closed.

Put a heavy ceramic plate or Temper proof pot lid on top of the pillow case  to prevent the bag flaps from trying to inflate.

Plenty of space left! I only did 3 bags here because ran short on Millet.

Now you can put the lid on and lock it into place.

On the large burner i set the stove to 9 and let it heat up.

After a couple mins the lock mechanism lifts into place and steam starts to escape the vent. For jars i vent for 10 mins but for the bags i let the PC vent for 15 minutes. I always get a few big sputters/hiss coming out of the vent at around the 12 minute mark.

Continue to let the steam vent so the air from inside the bags/PC gets purged.

When the 15 minute timer is up place your rocker weight on the vent and the pressure will begin to rise.

Once i get to about 10-11psi i drop the temp dial to 4.

Once the pressure reaches 15psi i wait about 3-5 mins and reduce the temp dial to just below 2. My glass too stove will hold 16 to 16.5 psi the entire time.

I set a timer for 120 minutes.

**Your heat up and pressure hold process may very so just try to dial it in.

Once the 120min timer goes off i then turn off the stove and just leave it alone.

Let the pressure decrease on its own.

Your bags are now sterilized.

The Final Step

Time to complete: 8 mins

Once the pressure reads 0 itll still be ridiculously hot so you can wait until it cools almost entirely to do this final step. I normal get right to it once its 0.

When youre ready go ahead and open it up, remove the plate and untie the pillow case. Lift the flaps and ensure the filter patches arent soaking wet. They shouldnt be and any beaded moisture should evaporate rapidly.

Remove a bag from the PC.  Take a kitchen or hand towel and place on the bag if its hot. Now massage the grains a bit to break them up. Repeat for all bags.

Now get your gorilla tape. Youre going to tear off two pieces about 4.5-5" long. Put them on the bag like so and tape over your clothes hanger. [You can also use clamps or hooks pierced through the tape. Just make the tape about 1" longer.

Now that your hangers  [or hooks] are in place we are going stand the bag straight up..give it a shake and tap on the bottom or drop the bag onto the table to get the grains to fall together.

Youre going to put your hand on the back of the bag right where the top of the seed is and hold the hanger in the other hand.

Now roll the bag gently so that it starts to let the flap wrap around the grain. [If the bag is sideways to you and the patch is facing to the right then roll it from left to right.]

The bottom of the bag is now facing upwards. The filter patch also exposed to the side facing downwards. Then swing the hanger over the bag and the patch will be facing up.

This is to let gravity work some moisture into what will later be the top of the grain. while its still hot the grain is still absorbing moisture. Leave them rolled like this for at least 30mins while they cool down a little more.

**Before i leave them to cool for a while i like to grab the little seam which is the actual bottom of the bag and shake out any caked grains. While its rolled itll be on top.

Then finally all you need to do now is hang the bags after theyve sat inverted for a while.

Hanging them helps create a plenum of air above the grains in the empty space below the patch. This is required so that your bags do not stall later.

As the myc colonizes it'll slowly force some of that air out through the patch.

If you dont hang the bag then it could just sit there like vacuum chamber and eventually it'll be a problem during inoculation and colonization.

Let the bags hang for at least 24 hours.

Once or twice after i first hang them ill lay a bag on its backside. [Patch up] and shake the bag gently so the grain flattens out inside the bag. This helps distribute moisture. Then hang em up again.

After at least 24 hours you can remove the hook/hanger and can prepare to inoculate your bags. Usually ill have bags with injection ports already on the bag but if i have to use a bag with just a filter patch then here is what i do to make a injection port.

Use an alcohol prep pad or Iso/Towel and clean off a spot about 3" above the top of the grains.

Once dry take a sharpie and mark a dot where youll inject your LC. Now take a piece of clear packaging tape about 2"×2" and place over the dot. Press firmly to the bag.

When you inoculate [in SAB or in front of a Flow hood] wipe the taped spot with iso let dry. Flame your needle and insert at the dot. Use a 360° motion and inject your LC at the top of the grains against the bag so that it runs down the sides. Before you remove your syringe tear off a new piece of tape slightly larger than the one before and place over the injection site as soon as you remove your syringe. Avoid pulling on the top of the bag so it doesnt suck in air before the hole is sealed with the tape.

That is all there is to it.

**Do not shake after inoculation. Wait til about 30% colonized then mix the grains around by massaging the bag or laying it on its back patch upwards.

**Be Careful** not to apply too much pressure when doing this so you dont blow the seal out of the bag when it has inflated some.

The process for doing spawn bags with Millet is very simple. It might seem like a lot of work on paper but once you do it once youll discover how easy it is and how fast it can be done.

If youre like me and dont have tons of prep time or limited privacy/alone time then this method is a great way to process bulk sterilized grains ASAP.

6th day after LC inoculation. Mixed and hope to see full colonization over the next 4-5 days.

[used packaging tape on this one] the other 2 had an IP below the grains and mixed up a big center colonized chunk]

Man what a write up!
Only thing I wonder about is why remove the sunflower seeds? I do have an affinity for them. Haha

Would this work if you were doing 18 bags at once? Like this https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26585250#26585250

Probably not. Theyre using hydrated grain. So you have to account for the expansion of the dry millet absorbing the standing water during the process.

That pc load is insane! Cant believe all that grain gets sterilized in 2 hours packed that tightly in there! Pretty cool.

That’s what I thought 20 psi though at sea level. I’m going go about 3-3.5 with that kind of load. Quick question, drawing from your experience why don’t them bags stick to each other or walls? He mention the unicorn bags which I’m getting and I see you mention putting rings between bags which I have done per Franks teks. That much difference in quality of bag?

Shevanel,
This is a great tek and will continue to use, what I recognized with the water and grain ratios it works out to make about 3.1lb bags. What is your position on spawn to sub ratio, from my understanding more spawn increase yields and I would like to make 4lb bags to 650g of coir and 2 quarts of verm. Do you have g recommendations on grain and water weight to make these? Any these assumptions faulty?

I find it equates to nearly 4.5 if not 5 myco quarts of spawn. My average 1st flush yield is 6-7oz this season since I stuck to Ms grows due to limited windows of time.

Had this happen on couple bags bad news, to high temps looks like burnt grain? Are they usable?
