Little known facts that blow your mind 6

Like for me, the fact that only 55 miles of ocean separate the United States (the furthest westward tip of Alaska) and Russia. I mean that just blows my tiny insignificant mind to pieces. I always think of Russia being a world away but technically, the closest points of each country is a short boat ride away.

Speaking of Alaska, another fact that boggles my mind is that Alaska, arguably the most beautiful and wildly rugged state in the US, was purchased back in 1867 for a measley 7.2 million dollars. Okay so sure back then 7.2 mil was worth way more than it is today -- roughly 120 million. But still, Alaska was bought for 2 cents an acre. Amazing.
What are some other odd facts that are amazing to you?

The fuck?
Put some salt and lime on them for a real treat, on corn tortillas at least.
Mango goes really well with cayenne pepper and salt, this is pretty common here but apparently it's not too well known in other countries?
If you get your braces done too quickly, the part that joins the teeth and the jaw weakens, so it's more likely a tooth will fall out at an earlier age.
All the kids who were born in the year 2009 (the year I registered) are now at least 10 and that scares me.

The northern elephant seal migrates up to 13,000 miles per year in a double migration pattern, more than any other mammal on Earth. An interesting fact in itself, but what makes it spectacular is that the seals return to the same exact spots after making these journeys in the pacific ocean! Although postulations have been made, the underlying method behind such a phenomenally exact course ov navigation has yet to be proven. Also ov note is the fact that female and male elephant seals take different courses due to their differing diets.

The game world in Minecraft is 600 million square kilometers. It's larger than the surface of the earth and we probably won't see a bigger game in our lifetime. In fact I can't see anything bigger coming along until quantum computers are the norm and an AI is developed that procedurally generates the universe as you explore it.

Bro don't you talk shit about my greenland sharks.
They're big beautiful ice sharks and because their eyesight sucks (they often have parasites in their eyes) they only hunt in very murky water, ambush style. They're the only shark of their size known to do this in this manner.
Though it's a very new discovery. They were thought to only be scavengers before.
They also attack and rip flesh off in a corkscrew pattern. Which is fun.
Also also it was recently determined that the pacific sleeper shark is in fact a different species. Which I'm a bit disappointed about. But I guess I'll just have to love them both.

Its gettin' serious!
The mathematical constant of Pi has an infinite number of digits and follows no known repeating pattern. The record for most digits calculated was performed by a supercomputer at the University of Tokyo that calculated a total of 206,158,430,000 digits: http://www.math.com/tables/constants/pi.htm

That's okay you just have to refer to them as big beautiful ice sharks from now on
California grizzly bear, the bear that is on the California state flag, was a brown bear sub species that lived in California. The last California grizzly bear, named Monarch due to his impressive size, died in 1911. He was stuffed and is now on display California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. It's said his image was used for the state flag.

RIP Monarch and things that could eat stupid liberals that don't know what they're doing in the woods...

There's a little island called Assateague Island off the coast of Maryland. A 37 mile stretch of sand. No people live here. You know who does? Horses. Ponies. Hundreds of them. As the story goes they're the ancestors of a shipwreck that happened there hundreds of years ago.

these are actual assateague island horses

this is just an obese horse that isn't from assateague island and may or may not be photoshopped

There are no real wild horses left in North America - all wild horses, including the mustangs in the SW, are descendents of horses the Spanish and other Europeans brought over in the 15th century.
The last truly wild horses in North America were hunted to extinction tens of thousands of years ago. And in fact there are no truly wild horses left, with the exception of one, in Mongolia, which is highly debated, called the przewalski horse
Also that pic is probably photoshopped because that horse would be at extreme risk of laminitis/founder. They can literally eat themselves to death much like we can, but death can come much sooner. Nothing like a 6am call from the stables to let you know that your horse has somehow escaped it's stall and eaten all of the prepared grain and food for all the horses, and now the vet's on their way to forcibly pump mineral oil down your dumbass horse's throat or else it's going to die.

No. i lied. its moar than the entire west coast.
It was also partially formed by an asteroid impact 35 million years ago, when it was a tropical oasis. It created a mega tsunami that reached the blue ridge mountains.
and those assateague horses are chill af. there are some fucking gorgeous spots on the bay, the more remote the better. Theres some dank nature preserves near rehoboth. Looks almost like africa.

There's a bunch of weird culty pyramids and cult activity hidden in Southeastern PA.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/rosicrucian-pyramids
Apparently it was a bit of a hot bed of cult activities in the '80s(but then again, satanic panic was in vogue then), and my godmother, who was an emt during this time, said that there was at least one(that she knows of) instance of human sacrifice/murder around that area(in particular, around the New Hope/Frenchtown area for people who may be familair).
There's also rumors of a haunted Dupont mansion around the area? Closer to Chadds Ford - which is where they filmed the village and is full of really old narrow, windy roads with lots of old ass buildings, pretty much. It's also regarded as a cult house.
That's mostly speculation, but tbh, it's transcended generations at this point.

Sperm whales can concentrate their echo location underwater clicks in rhythmically pressurized patterns that can instantaneously kill a human via internally imploding organs with resonant frequency. on a lesser amount of force, your eardrums burst.
They do this with their monkey flaps
Quote:
The colossal toothed whales pass air through nasal passages which is subsequently forced through two lips called “monkey lips” at the front of its nose just below the blowhole. (The production of sound is similar to air passing through the neck of a balloon.) The sound is then amplified by a fatty, wax-filled organ called the spermaceti organ that sits on top of the skull. The clicks then bounce off a portion of the skull and are directed back outward through the spermaceti organ.
https://roaring.earth/sperm-whales-can-vibrate-humans-to-death/
*With the more whales, the stronger the potential energy.
Like a hole pod of whales pissed off will just

On King's day, the King and Queen are dragged around the nation and made to play games and be met by the peasants. On this particular one, they visited a village where "toiletbowl tossing" was a thing, so they thought it was fun to have the King denounce his throne, so to say
He was ashamed but I actually think its awesome we have royalty that indulge the population even in such irreverent things.
More than a few royal families elsewhere would be too stuck up to do it

There are about 1021 (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, a billion trillion, a Sextilion ) atoms in a lump of sugar.
This is approximately the same number as there are estimated to be stars in the known universe.

If you drop a can of soda into a Neutron Star, the force of impact is equivalent to an atomic bomb going off.
A typical neutron star is twice as heavy as the sun but only about 10 miles in diameter.
Its surface temperature typically is 100x that of the sun.
Quote:
A neutron star is so dense that one teaspoon (5 milliliters) of its material would have a mass over 5.5×1012 kg, about 900 times the mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza. In the enormous gravitational field of a neutron star, that teaspoon of material would weigh 1.1×1025 N, which is 15 times what the Moon would weigh if it were placed on the surface of the Earth.
Despite these enormous masses, pulsar Neutron stars rotate at enormous speeds up to over 700 times a second.

I love cats -- all the big cats are fascinating to me. But cheetahs are probably at the top for me. Watching them step on the gas and floor the pedal when they're locked in on a fleeing prey item is one of the great scenes in all of nature for me. They are the Ferrari of the cat species.

Absolutely! Cheetahs are one of my favorite animals. I also recently got into Spirit Animals and the Cheetah sounded a lot like my personality, in both strenghts and weaknesses: https://trustedpsychicmediums.com/spirit-animals/cheetah-spirit-animal/
And as u may know already, Cheetahs are the fastest land animal on Earth:l, clocking in at 75mph! https://earthnworld.com/top-10-fastest-land-animals-in-the-world/

They're fragile and they only have a fraction of the raw power of the other fierce cats (tigers, lions, jaguars, etc.) but their speed and finesse is just something to behold.
It's also fascinating how they can overheat to the point of brain damage (I think?) if they max out the turbo jets too long. Not enough oxygen gets to their brain or something so they have to throw in the towel on a chase if they can't catch what they're trying to catch.

Alright I'm back to demolish your feeble minds with this primo fact mind destroyer
The earth's largest desert is actually in Antarctica.
The Antarctic Polar Desert. Which is about 5.5 million square miles. The Sahara in comparison is 2 million square miles smaller.
A desert doesn't have anything to do with temperatures -- it just needs to be a region that receives less than 10 inches of precipitation a year.

Mortality Rates: Smallpox - 30% MERS - 34.4% Ebola Virus - 50% Nipah Virus - 40-75% Rabies Virus - 100%
Rabies, the fairly common virus that you've likely been within a couple hundred feet of at some point, is far and away the deadliest (fast-acting) virus on Earth. The only other pathogen with a comparable death rate (though not quite hitting 100%) is pneumonic plague which is bacterial and not viral.

You can use gallium to form an alloy with aluminum that's extremely fragile. It'll infiltrate a very large part of the aluminum if it touches a part not covered with aluminum oxide:

I saw a little known fact the other day I wanted to post here but forgot.
Let's see if I can remember it...I think it was: It would take 12 million mosquitos to suck all of the blood out of an average sized human being. I think it was 12 million anyway.
I actually thought it would take more...but then again 12 million mosquitos is a lot of mosquitos.

Quote:
Bamboos usually have a lifecycle around 40 to 80 years, varying among species. Normally, new bamboos grow up from bamboo shoots at the roots. At infrequent intervals for most species, they will start to blossom. After blossom, flowers produce fruit (called "bamboo rice" in parts of India and China). Following this, the bamboo forest dies out. Since a bamboo forest usually grows from a single bamboo, the death of bamboos occurs in a large area.

Doritos are good I've tried them and they are still not as good as cheddar and sour cream, they just compliment the tomato soup so well

genetic material usually consists of a base, a ribose and phosphoric acid.
In a pool where phosphoric acid was in low supply and arsenic in the form of arsenic acid waa in high supply, variant genetic material evolved that replaced part of the phosphoric acid with arsenic acid. because this has similar but somewhat different chemistry and physical propereties, there are a number of microiorganisms that require arsenic as an essential nutrient, while all other organisms abhor it.

2 feral cats may produce over 50 descendents in 16 months. 52 contained cats can consume over 1400 average sized adult humans and produce over 1800 pounds of feces and around 632 gallons of urine in 16 months and with that you might be able to make enough black powder to put down an asante thread
