More than 15,000 Italian lives lost to their dear ones, to our society, to our nation. It’s a devastating pain, and in these difficult times I can openly say that American President Trump once more has proven to be Italy's true and loyal friend. I want to thank President Trump who immediately made us feel his support, his presence, and I am very grateful to American people for this.

Gotta love the Chinese version of capitalism.

Is it a conspiracy, no, but their way of doing business sucks. It's like most of the rubbish we buy off them, the quality is ahhh close enough.

If the item you buy breaks just take it back you'll get another one as it's all cheap crap that's worth next to nothing

Wanna get your mind blown? The US was shipping medical supplies to China as late as March 17th. Because it was a hoax back then.

So whats your point? You're the one trying to portray the Chinese government as benevolent, when that couldn't be further from the truth

My point isn't that the CCP is benevolent.

My point is the title of the thread. The CCP has stepped up as the global leader against Covid-19, filling the power vacuum left by Humpty Dumpty in the white house.

I'm not making a value judgement--personally, I'd rather that China's ascent to world leadership was delayed by another 2-3 decades. The rise of China was inevitable, but the continuation of the CCP was not. A 2-3 decade delay would have been enough time for the ruling party to capitulate, as Xi likely is removing competent subordinates for fear of uprising.

Basically, I'd rather have a Global Superpower China led by the equivalent of Boris "Blotto" Yeltsin, and not Joseph "Stalinium" Stalin.

Your point is wrong, China is not a global leader against covid-19 when they lie, cheat, steal and step on the rest of the globe.

That is unless you mean China is stepping up as a global leader in lying, cheating and fucking over the rest of the globe, in that case you are correct. They have also stepped up as a global leader in pollution, oppression and human rights violation.

That's like the pot calling the kettle black as far as the USA has been concerned on the world stage.

American propaganda is a well oiled machine that has been leaking bad in recent history. Not to mention our representatives actions have dwindled trust on the world stage and the home front.

Meanwhile countries are calling for a temporary cease fire while the US is ramping up operations and eyeing up other resources.

Democracy doesn't come from drones.

I guess i misinterpreted this post as you touting Chinas benevolence.

China is currently doing more for the people of NYC than the Federal Government.

The virus came from china bro. They better step up and try and to contain it, and prevent further epidemics from rising. If they didn't eat everything that moved, maybe we wouldn't have global pandemics every couple of years.

-China lied about the virus
-tried to conceal the extent of the virus
-censored doctors and journalists from reporting on the virus
-arrested the doctor who found and tried warning everyone about it (he later died from covid) for spreading "rumors"
- stole medical equipment from other countries and then sold back to them for a higher price
-blocked Taiwan from the WHO (meanwhile Taiwan nipped the virus and their doctors credited NOT listening to the WHO (china health organization) )

And after all that instead of vilifying them you want to give them some sort of kudos or pat on the back for their "efforts". Get the fuck out of here with that bro and get off the red koolaid. China doesn't deserve any praise or admiration for how the handled their virus

The mark of a good leader is the ability to make a decision.

If it happens to be the right decision, even better.

China is showing leadership. The US is not.

In this particular instance it seems leadership is being confused with communist dictatorship.  Do you personally believe all the numbers that the Chinese government has put out knowing that they did absolutely cover it up for at least a little while?

I get your point.
However, it's worth noting that the U.S. started screening flights from Wuhan Jan 22nd, so the U.S. Health Department was across things(compared to say MERS or SARS etc) even though Trump wasn't, no real surprise there.

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/wuhan-coronavirus-china-flight-screening-gaps-first-us-case-2020-1?r=US&IR=T

Quote:

the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) started scanning many passengers coming from Wuhan to the US on direct flights, via screening systems at San Francisco International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and New York’s JFK airport.

Chicago O’Hare Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta, Georgia, are due to start the process as well some point this week.

It still appears the WHO and the CCP couldn't get their stories straight and wrongly downplayed this and misled the world well into February.

Wuhan doctors say colleagues died in vain amid official cover-up

You don't need to be a dictator to make a decision. You just need to be secure in yourself and trust your instincts.

I honestly think trumpy couldn't decide between a hamberder and a filet o fish for lunch if asked.

Hell, he can't even fire someone to their face on reality TV. Those "you're fired" clips from the apprentice were cut together.

It seems we had plenty of time to prepare.  People just want to blame China now like they used to blame Russia for colluding with Putin and election meddling, until both of those stories completely fell apart.

Given the timeline above, this story's falling apart as well.

It shows the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing when it came to most western governments and the Chinese government.

We had airlines moving on this in late January, yet the Chinese embassy was berating the Aus government for not easing the travel restrictions in mid February :flowstone:

Right across the board, governments of most countries did not respond quickly enough or appropriately enough.

Many governments responded quickly and appropriately. South Korea, Singapore, Germany, just to name a few. I would also argue that China responded appropriately once they realized the magnitude of the problem, which considering they are likely ground zero, is pretty understandable. Even then, less than a month before confirmed patient zero and full on national response.

I think an interesting tidbit is that of every pandemic simulation the US has ever run, none of them have ever modeled that the US, the previously undisputed leader in biomedical engineering (definitely disputable with Covid-19, heh), would fail to adequately test and track the illness. I'm trying to find the specific quote, I've posted it in one of these threads already.

This is part of why there was a delay. Government failures prevented adequate testing, and failure of testing mean that the pandemic plans that are in place in every hospital never triggered until it was way too late. Which is why we now have medical supply shortages. Normally, the pandemic trigger comes with mass buys of medical supplies.

Unrelated: China has beat the US in number of patents this year for the first time ever. China is now #1 in scientific output by volume of peer reviewed papers (as of 2018), #1 in renewable energy, #1 in mechanical and civil engineering, and #1 in patenting new technology. I expect them to pass the US in biomedical engineering in the next year due to Covid. If they get a vaccine to market before us, we are done.

We are officially #2 in science and technology. Still #1 in gun violence and Covid deaths, though!
